Planet hab
[edit]Hi Mred,
Please don't misinterpret my comments about the page. No one owns articles and you should absolutely edit if you like. It's just with complicated referencing someone has to watch it all the time. Anyhow, to add a source use {{|mn|Name|#}} in the body of the article and a corresponding {{|mnb|Name|#}} at the bottom (primary under primary and secondary under secondary). If you're deploying it between 9 and 10 say, everything after 10 will have to be manually bumbed up one number both in the body and at the bottom. Note there is a second reference system that employs fn rather than mn for explanatory footnotes that are tangential in the body. Maybe this just makes everything more confusing :(. You can always just hit edit the page and duplicate what you see.
BTW, if you don't want the table of contents to show up on your user page, use __NOTOC__ at the top. Cheers and feel free to ask for further clarification, Marskell 08:19, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again. To answer your most pertinent question, its option three: "the order each reference appears in the article". The footnoting is not based on some priority of which article is most important--it's just whatever happens to show up first as a point that needs referencing. The reference to the HabCat (Tarter & Turnbull) is the first as it stands and, yes, it's broadly the "most important" to the structure of the article but beyond that any reference can show up anywhere (and if you think something else should be first, make it first!). If you're interested in who's tackled this topic, check James Kastings and Alan Boss. There's a lot of names in the field, but they're probably the biggest ones.
- Finally, I didn't think you were sarcastic at all. I actually thought I gave the impression of having undue ownership over an article where I shouldn't have so I tried to point that out. Planet hab is absolutely the page I'm most proud of (I did start it and got it to Featured Article) but I don't want to stifle contributions--indeed, that would sort of defeat the purpose of being proud! If, long after I'm gone, life is discovered off-Earth I hope it gets lots of hits and everybody wonders "who was this Marskell character" :). Marskell 23:55, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hey Mred. Hope you're still around and up for editing. I noticed at one point in our talk page discussions you referred to Astronomy mag as a source. Why not add the source to the article to get the swing of it? I deduce that it could be the source for: "Further, close neighbours might disrupt the stability of various orbiting bodies such as Oort cloud and Kuiper Belt objects, which can bring catastrophe if knocked into the inner solar system." As I say, just click edit the page and follow the syntax as you see is it. If you have a link to it on-line that would be good but if not no worries so long as the ref is fully elaborated. Cheers, Marskell 12:35, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry for taking a while. Don't worry about the link if you can't get right to the article. Just add the source as the others are. This will be late in the page, so you will only have to bump up a couple of numbers. I'll check it after. Cheers, Marskell 14:29, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
FoxTrot
[edit]Hi. I wasn't the originator of the peer review, but I did have it on my Watchlist. Here is the link. Someone archived it: Wikipedia:Peer review/FoxTrot/archive1. Hope this helps.
