True or false: you really like false dichotomies. - Nunh-huh 00:41, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- What is a dichotomie?? 66.245.99.94 00:44, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- A dichotomy is a division into exactly two, usually mutually exclusive, possibilities. A false dichotomy is a choice between exactly two possibilities where many other possibilities exist. It is a logical flaw. What I meant by alluding to it in response to your question is that there are many names this category might be given, and to suggest that if what you meant to indicate is "I think this category should be renamed "X"", you might just say that. And you might want to give a rationale for your feelings on that name choice. - Nunh-huh 02:09, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
English people
[edit]It seems that there are some differences between the current use of this category, and its defining article:
- at present, Category:English people is used as territorially defined category, for the people of England;
- in the same time, current description claims that main article for this category is: English people;
- but, article English people is dedicated to people of English ethnicity, all around the world;
- therefore, strange difference exist between the current scope of this category, and its defining article.
Since the polysemic term English people is used as title for the article that refers to people of English ethnicity, all around the world, wouldn't it be logical to use Category:English people for the same subject? In that case, proper name of the territorially defined category for the people of England would be Category:People of England, or something similar. That would be consistent with the Wikimedia Commons: Category:People of England. It is quite strange that here on English Wikipedia any inconsistencies should still exist, regarding the use of basic terms like English people and People of England.
