Missing meaning

I came here hoping to find out what "English rose" meant when used of an English or British woman (some sort of feminine type, I gather from context); but both Wikipedia and Wiktionary fail hard on this count. Maybe y'all could add it... --129.49.7.125 (talk) 23:05, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There used to be an explanation on this page, but it was removed (by you, I think, JHunterJ) It read:

English Rose usually refers to one of England's national emblems, the Tudor Rose. The term is also a complimentary description of an English lady of fair complexion. The latter is not intrinsic to English romantic imagery. Recently not prevalent in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, as a reflection of older references to fair English women, where in pre-Arthurian texts the Celtic derivation of pale, 'Gwen', was given to Arthur's wife, and the term 'fair', beyond a quality of complexion, became synonymous with beauty, gentleness, purity, and association with nature and landscape.

Please can something be done about the priorities and perhaps the content of the article. I came here a couple of days ago and, like the first person to leave a comment above, was surprised by lack of emphasis given to the main dictionary definition of the term. I went ahead and produced a content which is now at English rose (personal description). To my mind that page fulfilled the general hub functions of the disambiguation page with good general effect.
I have not conducted any sort of a pole but I would imagine that, if we asked a bunch of people what an English R/rose was, very few would mention the Tudor Rose. I really don't think it usually means that in most people's minds. I also very much doubt that they would initially think of a recording by the Jam that did not get individual release. Its really the everyday meanings of the term that I think should be focussed on. People also talk about the English rose in terms of the horticultural flower but I am unsure where and how to best cover this. Gregkaye (talk) 20:59, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia isn't a dictionary. Articles aren't disambiguation pages. As already suggested, see WP:RM for how to move the dab page out from the base name and the desired article to the base name, if that's the change desired. -- JHunterJ (talk) 23:44, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I absolutely agree. It is an encyclopaedia that is based on a large number of articles on notable topics. It is a source if information that is serviced with various navigational aides which ideally present information in a sequence of priority. Again I think the first comment on this page has relevance.
