Somebody needs to actually say what the Multistate Bar Exam is for (I am not qualified). Is it optional? Why only 48 states? Etc. And why is this a separate article from the Bar exam? Thanks.

This is a separate article from bar examination because the MBE is (1) used only in the United States, (2) is not used in all U.S. jurisdictions, and (3) the passing score varies from state to state.
The MBE is a mandatory component of the bar examination in all jurisdictions in which it is used. Because each U.S. state is a separate sovereign, there is some variation among laws from one state to the next. For example, some states allow lawsuits for negligent infliction of emotional distress and most don't. So the MBE tests a synthesis of state law which focuses on areas in which there is currently a clear majority rule (but in some areas does fall back to rules derived from English common law that are no longer used in a majority of states). I'll explain more later. --Coolcaesar 20:43, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
