[edit]I made a minor change to the Corktown page to reflect the correct western border of Corktown, which is Berkely Street, and to add Trinity Street to the list of those with old style row housing - I live in one of them! - Chris Hutcheson, April 12/05
Sept 10 2020 I removed the link to the community site since it's a dead link: http://www.corktown.ca/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/ Going to http://www.corktown.ca/ gets you to a spammy placeholder site with nothing whatsoever on Corktown. Boundaries of the district?
[edit]The boundaries of the district in the lead paragraph are unreferenced, and are at odd with the image in the infobox. The lead currently claims Corktown goes from Shuter Street south to Queens Quay and Lakeshore Boulevard, and includes the Distillery District. I added {{cn}} and {{who}} tags.
My understanding of the idea we should use historic names of districts is that (most) of those district names refer to residential districts. Originally the Gooderham and Worts campus covered most of what we now call the West Don Lands -- all industrial, and thus not part of the historical Corktown. Loblaw and Cork's Grocery
[edit]Although I am sure it is not an origin for the name Corktown, there is an interesting article by the Ontario Heritage Trust (http://www.heritagetrust.on.ca/CMSImages/6b/6b9eb967-9dea-44ae-8d07-bca5e7125f61.pdf) about the founder of the Loblaws grocery empire and his start working for a Mr. Cork on King Street East. Here is a brief extract...
At the age of 17, Loblaw worked as a ploughman on a local farm and managed to save $20. Using a dollar of his savings – plus a $10 gift from his brother and a new suit from his sister – he headed for Toronto in search of a better job. He eventually obtained a job in a grocery store, Cork’s Cash Grocery located at 400 King Street East, working for J. Milton Cork. After work each Saturday night, he would ride his bicycle home to Alliston and then ride back to Toronto early the following Monday morning. Jdr.to (talk) 19:01, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
