Government of Western Australia

[edit]

I am not very familiar with any of the political coverage on Wikipedia but surely it could at least redirect to Government of Australia? I noticed whoever deleted it failed to notice that Western Australian Government redirected to it. Brianjd

Looking at the history, considering that there seem to be no instructions otherwise, and noting that pages are not normally listed there in the first place, it seems that resolved issues are simply deleted from Wikipedia:Speedy deletions. Brianjd

[edit]

You flagged Ancient Eleutherna as a copyright violation (got it before I could!). You will probably notice, but a minute later the user erased the notice and put up sample Wikipedia images. I would have reverted, but another user came along and marked it for a speedy deletion. I don't know if it's better to just let it get speedily deleted or to make sure the copyright issues are resolved, so I'm leaving it for now—just wanted to let you know. — Knowledge Seeker 10:40, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Heya, thanks for the heads up. I don't really care what happens to copyvio's, as long as they're gone. I don't think they're actually speedy deletion candidates as they have a meaningful history, but I'm not going to kick a fuss. --fvw* 10:49, 2004 Dec 1 (UTC)

Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation

[edit]

On the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation page you wrote: (changed parentheses (again) to automatic sizing.

But they were _not_ in automatic sizing. That formula just had plain small parentheses. So putting \bigg( and \bigg) made things better, and what you put, \left( and \right) is even better. So you did a good job, but I don't understand the 'again' part in your remark. --Olegalexandrov 21:07, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I was not offended or anything. Written text is hard to interpret sometimes. I just wondered what you meant. Thanks for the correction. Now I see your point. Thanks. Olegalexandrov 00:44, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[Copyright violations]

[edit]
Hi. I come accros many articles on wikipedia where the text is exactly copied from E. Britannica and the source is mentioned.

Why can't I do the same? Do the people contact the Britannica every time they want to take a sentence from that work? --Mani1 08:56, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Fighting vandalism

[edit]

No problem about reverting the vandalism. Just as you were reporting it, I was too. It is much easier with two of us doing it. -- JamesTeterenko 03:56, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I stated working on the backlog of Wikipedia:Copyright problems, and ran across Las Khorey. As you moved the rewrite to the /Temp page, I thought you might be interested in the slight weirdness that ensued.

I deleted the original page with the copyvio, and moved the /Temp page into its place. Then, noting it was in terrible need of cleanup, I started working on it. One of the first things I did was Google "Archeological and Paleoenvironmental Research in Northern Somalia" to see if there was a better cite for it. Notice the misspelling? I didn't.

Misspellings have a certain uniqueness, and Google popped up exactly one page on the whole internet with it. It was exactly the same as the rewritten version. Given that the rewrite was by the same user that posted the copyvio in the first place, I was about to tag the new version as a copyvio as well. But then I dug a little deeper.

The other site's text turned out to have been posted on December 16, nine days after the new version was started. It also appears the same user has posted other material taken from Wikipedia to that site. I've posted a note on the article's talk page to that effect. -- Cyrius| 06:01, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Re: Sandbox revert question

[edit]

Thanks for your response to my query, Knowledge Seeker.

I think my problem was just some bug in the history page that day.

I have since successfully performed a couple of real reverts with no problems, so that must have been all it was. PaulHammond 16:30, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

In reply to your kind comments

[edit]

Kenkam, I know you are new here, but you have been making some unfounded accusations against Curps. Please read Wikipedia:No personal attacks and Wikipedia:Vandalism for explanation of the terms. He has not performed any vandalism, nor made any personal attack of which I am aware.

  • (reply) Hi Knowledge Seeker, thank you for your kind comment. My compliant against Curps is not unfounded but well documented with every point fully explained. Curps was the one the launched unwarranted attacks against me, I do not have any ill intent with Curps though. kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Your comments, however, about his being on a vendetta and his insecurities over his article are bordering on an attack. You seem overly attached to the idea of ownership of articles: none of the articles are yours or his. Furthermore, you may perceive it as a vendetta since you are the only one in favor of these changes. You may feel you have been singled out, but it is because you continue to make these changes without a single user to support you; on the other hand, there are a large number who are in favor of the current system.

  • Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia and anyone can edit it .. that is what it says so with its original intent. While I never claimed ownership or rights over any of my contributions, I have been side-lined by Curps through his deletes, moves and hurtful comments about me and so I can only defend gracefully as decently as I can ... Curps, "if you can stop pinching me, I'll stop crying in pain" ... kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Also realize that other contributors, including me, won't be impressed with your continual vague claims of all the other Wikipedians who support your claim if none of them actually step up and back you up.

  • I have never said other Wikis were in support of me but I pointed to the massive net communities that is calling the event "Asian Tsunami" not only me (3.5 millions sites out there). The Wikis I may have mentioned were friendlies that suggested that I start a series on my own without the struggle of change by the initiator of the original article. Anyway, my purpose is to state the facts and they will convince themselves. I do not seek other's impressions or support, because the truth will permeate itself ... always. kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

What I'd recommend you do at this point is back off gracefully.

  • Suggestion or threat ?? kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

And apologizing to Curps wouldn't be a bad idea either.

  • My apologies but Curps is the perpetrator ... ;-)kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

If you have material you would like to add about the earthquake, 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake#Quake characteristics would be a great place.

  • If my contributions were accepted in the first place, would we be have this discussions ?!kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

If that section gets too large, then you or someone else may suggest spinning the tsunamis off into 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami or something like that.

  • Some categories of the topic don't fit (Wiki sense) into the original article. The original article talks about the indian ocean earthquake in 2004 where events has massive occurred even currently and has evolved to other dimensions that need Wiki attention.kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

However, remember to respect the consensus of all editors. Wikipedia is a community, which means that we must all work together. Sometimes we may not all agree but we should follow policy and consensus.

  • How I wished kindness was first showered upon me before I could beautifully reflect it back ... alas !kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

If you can't bear to follow these rules, you are free to write whatever you like on your own web site,

  • I have ... Curps either deleted it or moved it (all documented)!! kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

but I hope you will stay here and devote your time and energy to improving these articles, rather than trying to write your own versions of them.

  • OK ... but I think someone needs to talk to Curps.!kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

As you said during the proposed name change, "'it is harder the change something you are used to than to scrub stubborn stains off your socks.'"

  • I said it ... I think it would be wise to let things as they are, that is why my "Asian Tsunami" series ... which has little to do with the 2004 earthquakes in the indian ocean. !kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I know it is hard to change what you are used to or what you would like, but just as you conceded that name change to consensus, try to respect it in other areas and don't try to circumvent it. — Knowledge Seeker দ (talk) 08:23, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • Have I not already closed the voting to move the original article ? I value consensus. Starting a different string of Asian Tsunami articles has little to do with last year's earthquakes in the indian ocean.kenkam 09:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism & Chris 73

[edit]

Hi Emax, just wanted to let you know that I removed your entry on Vandalism in Progress. Please read the directions at the top of the page before posting an alert. The first sentences on the page are

Please report vandalism at the top of the "Current alerts" list below. Please only use this page for repeated malicious vandalism, not for one-off edits, or newbie tests. Except in cases of vandalbot or other rapid-fire attacks, please warn users and wait for further vandalism before listing them here. Do not list non-vandalism (see Cautions and alternatives below).

I understand you may have been offended by a comment, but that does not qualify as vandalism—in fact, the vandalism page specifically mentions that personal attacks are not considered vandalism. Furthermore, the directions state to "only use this page for repeated malicious vandalism" and to "wait for further vandalism" before posting an entry. I hope this all makes sense. Why don't you take a look at the vandalism page, and feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker দ (talk) 20:49, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Chris 73 called an other user a moron, is not the Vandalism in Progress the right place where such things were reported? If not, on which page should i do that?--Emax 21:03, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)

Emax, thanks for your question. Vandalism in Progress is definitely not the place for this, as it is neither vandalism nor "in progress." For one thing, it looks like this took place back on January 14th. Second, ViP is for users who are repeatedly vandalizing articles. The first step is to ask the user to stop; if he or she doesn't, and continues to vandalize articles, then the user should be listed on ViP. Since in this case, the episode occurred just once, it is not appropriate for ViP.

With regards to your second question, I am not sure there is any page report such an action. If you are having a conflict with another user, dispute resolution lists the steps you can take. The first step, after avoidance, is to talk to the other person. If calling another user a moron was the only problem, then it would appear that the conflict is over, and no resolution is necessary. The other thing is that while you stated that he called another user a "moron", the diff you provided showed him adding "what a mXXXX." Did he use the word moron somewhere else? — Knowledge Seeker দ (talk) 21:52, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes he says "what a mXXXX", but its clear what that means. If not, everyone could offending other users with "You fXXX aXXX" or "son of a bXXX" - without any consequences.
See: [1]
On the same talk page he makes fun of Polish culture: [2]
So its clear that he offending the user and it should have consequences for Chris 73. Admins are responsible for the image of wikipedia - admins who offending other users, making a bad image.--Emax 22:20, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)
Hi Knowledge Seeker. FYI, I realized that my comments were not appropriate shortly after I made them on the page User talk:24.7.179.169/Archive Emax helpfully pointed out to you. For both instances I apologized to space cadet [3] and Halibutt [4], both of whom seem to have accepted the apology. For me this case is closed. Happy editing -- Chris 73 Talk 23:07, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)
I dont think that your apology was serious - you apologized after i showing Halibutt your rasistic comments, and he asking you for that. (what would happen if i would not show Halibutt your comments? I guess no apology)--Emax 23:51, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)

Chicago streets

[edit]

Great, thanks a lot! I guess the data I'll need is:

  • What streets have multiple levels, and how many.
  • Where ramps exist between different levels (this could get tricky, with streets moving between levels). Also, which ramps are one-way (and if any multi-level streets are one-way).

Then there's the question of how to present it in a map. The best way might be to simply have three maps, one for each level, with connections clearly marked. --SPUI (talk) 07:56, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

"Wow, that's a nice diagram. Pretty accurate; I don't know how you got that information, because I've never been able to find it anywhere without actually driving it."

I've been using aerial photos at [5], as well as various descriptions online like directions and bus schedules. I'll get to looking at the rest of what you posted in a bit; thanks a lot. --SPUI (talk) 21:48, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

One question - any idea where the west end of lower lower Wacker is? --SPUI (talk) 22:03, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I just updated Image:Wacker Drive side view.png. I'm confused about the westbound upramp between Michigan and Wabash - you don't list it, but it appears to have kept as part of the new construction (see [6]). Has it become pedestrian-only? --SPUI (talk) 23:26, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I just made Image:Chicago service level.png, showing what I know about the service level. One major thing I don't know is which side most ramps are on. --SPUI (talk) 00:55, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm, looks like there's technically a Lower Lower North Water Street, since it passes under Lower Lake Shore Drive. --SPUI (talk) 02:07, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Field Boulevard seems to not exist but have provisions for it (at the turnaround where Upper Wacker ends). [7] is where I got the name. --SPUI (talk) 03:58, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

There seems to be a Lower Carroll Avenue just north of the river, near La Salle, but I can't make it out clearly on aerials. Any idea how this one works? --SPUI (talk) 04:21, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I've done the first draft of Image:Chicago upper level.png. --SPUI (talk) 06:13, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Don't worry about how I'll show it; I'm also working on a lower level map to go between the others. As for terms, I'm using upper and lower where there are two levels, and upper/mid/service where there are three. Is that fine with you? --SPUI (talk) 06:45, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

For the record, [8] is where I got the Columbus ramps near Randolph from. --SPUI (talk) 06:57, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Aha, [9] (PDF) also shows the ramps, at least the southbound down one. --SPUI (talk) 07:06, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I've done the first draft of Image:Chicago lower level.png. I know I need work at Carroll and Beaubien; I'm very unsure about Lower North Water as well. --SPUI (talk) 08:02, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I've also made Image:South Water Street.png. --SPUI (talk) 08:19, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure about Wacker - I guess mid and lower can be synonyms, with mid used when necessary for clarity. I don't think I've seen the service levels referred to as simply 'lower'. --SPUI (talk) 08:37, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

"There are only two ramps: the one up from service enters mid Columbus just north of Lake; the one down to service leaves mid just south of Lake."

Just to confirm - you cannot turn left from the northbound upramp to Lake, right? --SPUI (talk) 18:12, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Another way to display it - Image:Chicago top down view.png. I'm only planning on doing this with the 3-level section, as it's the most confusing. --SPUI (talk) 00:42, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

And another way - Image:Chicago all levels.png. I'll probably go with this and the top-down. --SPUI (talk) 23:54, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The two parts I'd really like info on are lower Michigan south of South Water, and Lower Michigan/North Water/Hubbard (I've seen that one differently on different maps). Also, for the upramp from SL Wacker to Lower Wacker, can you turn left onto it from Columbus, and can you turn left from it to Stetson? --SPUI (talk) 18:26, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oh, how sure are you of Lower Beaubien going only to Lake? The National Bridge Inventory data includes a listing for "BEAUBIEN" over "LOWER LEVEL BEAUBIEN" from "LAKE ST TO RANDOLPH" (built 1956). --SPUI (talk) 04:13, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I had seen on other maps that Hubbard was the one to go through. And originally both went through (Image:Lake Shore Drive 1941.jpg). As for other stuff, I can only think of a few minor things:

  • How far does Carroll Ave go, on both ends, and how far east does the railroad along it go?
  • Does Lower Wabash end at Kinzie, or does it continue? I'd assume it ends there, since they were able to close the intersection.
  • How much of the upper level at Lakeshore East (east of Columbus) has been built?

As for locating the south ends of Lower Michigan and Beaubien, if there are any stairs or buildings visible, they could be matched to the upper level. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help. I've started writing articles on the streets (Randolph Street (Chicago)). --SPUI (talk) 09:19, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

My page

[edit]

Please do not revert my page any more. Like the other administrators, you have no scruples about engaging in revert wars when it suits you without following any procedures. If you want to preserve the content on that page, you can move it to your page. I'd like you to stop, please. [199.111.225.59 (talk · contribs)]

Sorry that you're getting frustrated. In general, reversion of blanked pages is a well-established practice. In addition, removal of comments from one's own talk page, especially negative comments, is viewed as somewhat sneaky and will usually be reverted. Talk pages are a way for users to see what the community thinks of a certain user and they way they interact. For this reason, archiving it on a remote page won't work. However, you may consider archiving it yourself to a subpage, provided you link the subpage from here. I'm not sure what kind of procedure you would like me to go through before reversion; as I said, it is common practice to revert blanked pages. I understand that you want the restoration to stop but understand that the community in general does not agree with you, and when you are fighting the community it is bound to be frustrating. Also please note that I am not an administrator. Finally, if those comments do not apply to you, or you wish to move on, I suggest registering and obtaining your own user name (it's free and no e-mail address is required). Hope this works for you! — Knowledge Seeker দ (talk) 07:20, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Response:

When you revert a page arbitrarily, what you are doing is in principle no different from vandalism. You are engaging in a revert war, and whoever has the most persistence wins, like a physical fight. A "procedure" would be arbitration, which is what you are supposed to do instead of having revert wars. Yes, revert wars are common and "well-established," but they are wrong. [199.111.225.59 (talk · contribs)]

Hi, and thanks for your comment. You may be correct that arbitrary reversion is similar to vandalism, but in this case the reversion is not arbitrary. It is the reversion of an edit which removed comments from a talk page. Note that if the reversions were truly arbitrary, one would expect that half the time we would be reverting to the blank version; in reality, the other users and I are specifically reverting the blanking of the page. You are correct, but arbitration is the last resort. More likely, either you would respect the consensus and leave the comments; or, if you continued to remove them, you would be banned for violating the three-revert rule. There would be no need to take this matter to arbitration, since the rule breaking would be quite apparent. I agree with you that revert wars are in general not a good idea, but that doesn't mean that if one user makes a change that others disagree with and reverts their reversion, that they should just sit back and let it happen. Sure, if I saw a problem and reverted a change and it got re-reverted, I would sit back and let someone else take a look in case I were wrong. In this case, you are the only one in conflict with multiple editors. If the restoration of comments "wins" this revert war, it will not be because any one user is more persistent, but rather, because the others in the community all disagree with you. Majority rule, for good or for bad, is what usually decides things here. Since I have reverted your page three times now I will stop, but I have no doubt that if you revert it again someone else will come along and restore it. I hope you understand that this is how the community works here, and again, if the target of these comments was someone else who used this IP address, then I strongly suggest getting your own username. Feel free to ask me any further questions. — Knowledge Seeker দ (talk) 07:43, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for being acting politely in this discussion. However, with all due respect, I think your reply is totally spurious. The actions of the people reverting my page, of course, do not reflect any "majority," but rather a determined minority of administrators (originally fvw, now apollomelos, you, and one other) who have decided to revert my ip address page. But none of these actors represent a majority, just as neither of the sides in a fistfight in a crowded bar represent a "majority," even if one side has more than the other. So all of your pious moralizing about "majority rule" is totally bogus. A majority is not whatever you say it is. Sure, I am alone in trying to keep my own page blank, but that is because I am the only person associated with that IP address, and naturally no one else cares. The administrators, for some reason, believe it to be their page, so they feel justified in reverting it. I am like a helpless minority at the hands of a small mob, to extend your democracy metaphor. And I think that if you began changing the user pages of other users, began violating everyone else's rights, pretty quickly there would be a majority forming against you. That page represents me; when I make an edit, that edit is attributed to the owner of that page. I quite clearly represent the majority who want their user pages left alone. What you are doing is simply competing against me in a revert war; your actions represent no principle. Your action is "arbitrary" in the sense that you undertook it at your own will without consulting anyone else, simply because you wished to keep certain comments on the page. If you are to be believed, the wikipedia community acts entirely arbitrarily; it is like a barbarous society where the strongest survive and the weak must accept the will of the strong. I think that is morally repugnant. You have quite clearly admitted that you do not care to follow arbitration procedures and believe that you should be able to unilaterally change another's user page when you wish. No, a consensus has not developed, and yes, the strongest will win this revert war. It is the law of the street, the law of force, the law of survival of the fittest. There will be a "winner" and a "loser," because all we are doing is engaging in a power struggle. [199.111.225.59 (talk · contribs)]

Chicago

[edit]

Is it possible that the middle level of Wacker is planned to connect to the new Field? Anyway, I'll have the new Image:Chicago top down view.png uploaded in a bit. --SPUI (talk) 13:22, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Oh, one question - assuming it still exists, does Lower Field connect to middle or service Randolph? --SPUI (talk) 13:24, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Do you know if there's a noticeable slope on the three levels of Randolph east of Columbus (if not, that would mean the old viaduct probably had one, in order to get from the middle level at Columbus to the upper level at Field)? Also, how does the level of the Lakeshore East loop compare with Lower Harbor Drive? As for Field, if the roof over the service level seems too low to be from the upper level, maybe it's from the middle level? --SPUI (talk) 08:09, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Much of the history information is being provided by someone else via email; I also have dates on the bridges from National Bridge Inventory data.

As for getting to Randolph westbound, you could always go eastbound and U-turn at the end.

If there's anywhere that it's possible to get a photo of the three-level structure with buildings behind, that might be best. Possibly something from Lakeshore East, or from south of Randolph? Also something showing what the service level is like might be nice. If you get a top-down of Lakeshore East from Upper Wacker, I'll make at least a stub for it. --SPUI (talk) 08:19, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Nice! I just uploaded what may be the final revision of the top-down map - Image:Chicago top down view.png. --SPUI (talk) 06:58, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

And Image:Chicago all levels.png is updated. --SPUI (talk) 09:43, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

On aerial photos, there seems to be a left turn lane heading westbound on Wacker at Field - is this U-turn only? It may have been built as a future provision that will be unused.

As for LSD - I think I have that all correct on the all levels map - that's pretty easy to make out from aerials. I decided to simplify it on the top-down view.

And with Stetson - aerials seem to show the stub south of Randolph - is this only accessible from Randolph, or has it been closed? --SPUI (talk) 17:33, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The left turn lane would be on Middle Wacker - it's visible on [10].

On [11], something can be seen south of Randolph along Stetson - it could be a walkway.

Image:Chicago top down view.png has been updated again with the latest information. --SPUI (talk) 04:40, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I just made Columbus Drive (Chicago) - you said you had a photo to add. --SPUI (talk) 05:23, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I've included both. By the way, the structure east of the upramp - is that the sidewalk? --SPUI (talk) 06:49, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

On Image:Columbus Drive, 3 levels (facing west).jpg there's something on the middle level between you and the upramp, with the columns going through it. Is that a sidewalk or purely structural? --SPUI (talk) 15:16, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks again. Does the Stetson stub into Millennium Park go anywhere, or is it something like a parking garage entrance? --SPUI (talk) 22:24, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Actually I'm talking about what's visible on the aerial pre-Millennium Park, that looks like the lower level - has that been completely removed? --SPUI (talk) 22:40, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm, it might be worth it to show the ground level on the top-down view. Would you be able to help with that, or should I hold off on it for now? --SPUI (talk) 22:53, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Nah, nothing like that. I'm thinking of diagonal (actually in this case vertical) lines of the appropriate color, showing what the highest walkable level is in an area (outside of sidewalks on viaducts). I've started on it and it seems like it may work. Aerials and the photos you took should suffice for most, but I'll probably need a bit of information, mainly about the block between Beaubien and Stetson, and the older buildings east of Lakeshore East. --SPUI (talk) 23:08, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

After trying to flesh it out more, I don't think it's going to work. --SPUI (talk) 23:27, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

By the way, on the images you moved to commons, you may want to use {{dbc}} so someone viewing the image will know why it's listed for deletion (assuming the image has the same filename). I did this on Image:Columbus Drive, 3 levels (facing southwest).jpg as an example; I made the template back when I was moving all my stuff to Commons. --SPUI (talk) 23:09, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Actually it's been sitting on WP:TFD for a while with no consensus either way. Feel free to vote :P --SPUI (talk) 06:26, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Bengali naming convention

[edit]

You mentioned something about being willing to help out with creating the convention. It would be very helpful to get an admin to enlighten us, but we can obviously get started. So, how do you recommend we proceed? I understand what med students go through; so while I should not legitimately ask for a lot of help, I am, just because I'm desperate :p! And once again, the links for the non-existent project: Project Bangla. There is also a Project Bangladesh that you might be interested in. Urnonav 01:43, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Getting volunteers would be important. I am also in a little tight situation with time. University never gives you freedom, does it? I have no objection to use of "Bengali" although I have a personal aversion to the way the word arrived in English. (It is a transliteration of the Hindi word Bangali!)

There has also been some dispute over which part of the culture to include as Bangladeshi and which part to include in West Bengal. One of the key things I see being achieved through the project is creation of articles related to Bengal to cover common features of culture, music, literature, etc. One small "achievement" recently was to create three separate articles: Music of Bengal, Music of Bangladesh and Music of West Bengal. The first covers common aspects, while the others cover more specific situations like artists and so on. We could carry on a similar case for other articles. There is also substantial amount to work on in terms of creating and completing stubs. Music of West Bengal, for instance, is a stub that deserves to be expanded to a full article. Urnonav 08:32, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

An initial project page has just been started: Wikipedia:WikiProject Bengal. The project was named Bengal since it seemed to cover a wide selection of topics and it also leaves open the possibility of creation of a subproject for Bengali language. [Urnonav (talk · contribs)]

Well, to write é you must write in your keyboard with the key { without Alt gr, and then e. I can´t help you with ñ. It´s a Key in my Keyboard.

Excuse me if It don´t like you, but you must write no sé hablar, because can can mean Saber y poder (saber if it es Knowledge and poder if it is a hability).

I´m not very good at English so I´d like you help me when I don´t know what I must write. Excuse my English--FAR 09:54, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Adminship

[edit]

Hi. In case you missed it, congratulations to your 1000th edit on Wikipedia! (or 1005th including User:Knowledgeseeker) You may not have noticed, but I was keeping an eye on you for quite some time. To be precise, since Emax claimed me to be a vandal. I liked your calm handling of the situation, and checked out some of your other edits. It seems you're doing quite a lot of maintenance work, know the guidelines, and generally get along with people well. Overall, I think adminship privileges would help you in keeping Wikipedia clean. Back then your edit count was a bit too low, but now I think you're ready. It would be my honor to nominate you for adminship. Let me know if you want to be nominated by me (You can have a sneak peek of the nomination on User:Chris 73/Work2, feel free to fix typos or do some rewording if you like). Best regards and happy editing -- Chris 73 Talk 04:41, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)

You're live: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Knowledge Seeker on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. Good luck. So far, my new admin nomination success rate is 100%. And, oh ... you're number 2 ;) Please add your acceptance to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Knowledge Seeker and answer the standard questions. Best wishes, -- Chris 73 Talk 07:22, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
It took guts for you to take a possibly controversial stance while up for administration. I respect that. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 22:58, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
Looks great! Lots of supports, no opposes, plus many nice comments. If it keeps on going like this, then you'll be an admin on Tuesday, and I keep my 100% success ratio :) -- Chris 73 Talk 12:03, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)

Chicago Pictures & Pedway/Double Decker Streets

[edit]

Thanks for your comments on the pic I added. I didn't take it but brought it over from the commons. I always thought that header image could be a little nicer.

Sorry but I don't know much about the history of Double Decker streets in Chicago but will keep my eye on it and help with research as I go along.

Additionally I'm going to help with your nomination for Adminship. You deserve it. --Jason 04:20, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC)

Blanking talk pages

[edit]

I noted with interest your discussion with the anonymous user about talk pages. I've always thought talkpages were simply the means for users to discuss issues connected with the encyclopaedia. I've also always considered them to be under the control of the user. The distinction between user pages and user talkpages that you draw is, I think, rather spurious. I think my view is more commonly held than yours too. Many users delete comments from their talk page under certain conditions. Some archive them out of consideration for other editors, but I'm not sure we're under any obligation to. The notion that your talkpage belongs to you in some sense is common. It might be considered a bit rude to blank it, but it's not something to be unduly concerned about.

Admins should, I think, take care not to invent policies based on what they perceive to be the community's feelings. Of course, you can disregard my thoughts when you are an admin. You'll be backed by other activists. So long as you are only using your powers on anons and other undesirables, you'll get support. Dr Zen 02:53, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Pictures

[edit]

You don't necessarily have to delete unused photos; just give them a category on commons (Chicago should be fine) and they'll be useful. I've added a bunch of NYC subway maps that aren't used anywhere on Wikipedia. And yeah, nice photos. From one of the green river ones, it appears that the service level in the 3-level area is slightly lower that the lower level to the west. Any idea if this is true? --SPUI (talk) 23:34, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

If there are too many photos, one solution is to make and link to a page on commons, like I did with Boston Post Road. --SPUI (talk) 00:13, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations!

[edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 06:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

getting accented characters to work

[edit]

Hi. I was reading Slowking Man's user talk page and came across your conversation about inserting accented characters into Wikipedia. If you want to avoid typing the number codes, you could launch either Microsoft Word, Wordpad or MSN Messenger in Windows XP. In those programs (and probably others as well) you hold Ctrl and press the accent you want, then release this and press the letter you want to be accented. Like, for é, you hold ctrl and press the apostrophe character (beside enter), release these keys, then press e. Voila! You can also construct accents like this out of the colon (hold shift-control), the comma, even the ^ thing. Then you just have to copy the character across to the edit window of Wikipedia. It's a bit hobbled-together, but it's better than stuffing around with function keys on a laptop. - Mark 14:21, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Autofellatio vandal

[edit]

I just blocked User:Fourvin indefinitely, then saw you had blocked him until March 27. I assumed the blocking thing would say that a user had already been blocked, but it seems not, so now we have two blocks on him/her. What do you think is best? My own feeling is that he seems to be a reincarnation of the user account that was blocked earlier today for the same thing, and so there's probably no point in assuming he might become a genuine editor, but as you got to him first, I'll respect your judgment. Best, SlimVirgin 20:24, Mar 26, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks!

We've just had another block conflict. ;-) I've blocked Punk25 indefinitely for user-page vandalism. Then I saw you had blocked him for a couple of days. I'm going to wait to see which block takes precedence. If you find this issue explained anywhere, please let me know and I'll do the same. Best, SlimVirgin 01:52, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
User:Punk25 fits the pattern of numerous Punk(number) accounts, starting with User:Punk1, which have been used only for vandalism, and which have been blocked. Jonathunder 01:53, 2005 Mar 28 (UTC)
Yeah, I've seen them before. I wonder what he's so angry about. — Knowledge Seeker 02:03, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'd say when a user account has been set up for the purpose of vandalism, and no (or virtually no) useful edits have been made, the thing to do is to block indefinitely. It's unlikely that someone who has only vandalized will ever become a useful editor; and if they do want to become (or are already) a regular editor, they're unlikely to use the vandal's account. Therefore, these are throwaway user accounts, and if they're not blocked indefinitely, they're likely to be used for vandalism until they are. That's my take on it anyway. SlimVirgin 02:07, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I see your point. I might ask a question about this on WP:AN. SlimVirgin 02:17, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
We got some answers at [13]. The second block (the latest one) is the one that sticks; and we're allowed to use our discretion when it comes to vandalism. SlimVirgin 03:14, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
Don't worry about the block. When he saw what had happened, User:Brian0918 blocked him indefinitely again. These are definitely sockpuppets created to cause vandalism: I've noticed over a dozen of them. Thanks for finding out about the shortest block being the one that counts. SlimVirgin 06:27, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

FYI, copied from my talk page. SlimVirgin 06:46, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, you should unblock, then apply an indefinite block. The advantage of blocking indefinately is that it forces the vandal to create a new account; if you don't, he or she may use the account again at a point where it is sufficiently mature to do page moves, which are more of a pain to clean up.-gadfium 06:43, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Avoiding speedy deletion of Zarphatic

[edit]

I saved what little I have so far. I see you're right on top of things. :-) I created the redirects because I didn't want to forget any. I'll keep the speedy deletion criteria in mind in the future. Thanks for the heads up. Tomer TALK 05:44, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Wow. A cursory glance at your Bengali Grammar article leaves me impressed. Even when I finish the Zarphatic article, it's still going to have "stub" status. I want to get as much information as I have on it "out there" right now, but I don't have the time to write a full-fledged article on it. Interest in Zarphatic, of course, is primarily restricted to Jews, non-Jewish Talmudists, and philologists, since it's been extinct for the past 600 years. :-/ From the perspective of Rashi-buffs, however, especially, its study is quite important. Anyways, keep up the good work, both on keeping track of potentially errant stubs redirects and on sanskritic language articles :-). Tomer TALK 06:05, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Bengali grammar

[edit]

Thanks! I will fill them out as soon as possible. Currently I'm running on disastrous sleep schedule; so progress will have to wait I think. I understand the table thing, but I am just over inclined to use HTML code instead because I already know XHTML! -- Urnonav 00:27, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Respect (on XTHML strict). I am still exploiting the greater flexibility of transitional :-)! Oh and there's an inherent trouble with fonts' treatment of the vowel signs - some want it typed the way it should appear whereas others "intelligently" put them in the right place. For some reason, Firefox uses some encoding (whatever Wikipedia specifies) and interprets the vowel signs "properly" and positions them likewise. I personally use this font called "Rupali" (available at Omicronlab) when typing out on word processing tools (because of a really nice look and feel), but the same syntax works here as far as vowel signs are concerned. You might try making Firefox use "UTF-8" as a default. - Urnonav 09:23, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
