Possible new inclusions
[edit]- Information about furry vs nekomimi eg http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/File:FurryChart.jpg
- Imageboard culture and catgirls.
- Products related to catgirls, images of headbands possible cosplay images.
- A lot more about catgirls and their prevalence in Japanese culture.
I think the article as it stands misses a lot of interesting information. I believe the primary reason for this is that it is very hard to produce citations for this topic. Any suggestions of sources likely to be citeable would be appreciated. For example http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Cat_girl actually is a far better article then what we have at this point - Bostwickenator (talk) 08:18, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Porting over information from ja.wikipedia
[edit]http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%8C%AB%E8%80%B3 has a better article. Even when I read it through Google translate. Can we get someone who can translate Japanese to help bring it across? Bostwickenator (talk) 10:31, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Image change to Wikipe-tan
[edit]Billhpike and Benjaminikuta - with regard to this reversion here - I see nothing wrong with the suggested change from a generic catgirl to that of Wikipe-tan. The Wikipe-tan image has a couple of advantages over the current image - it's higher resolution, has an article dedicated to the subject, and doesn't have a large blank area at the top, which is purely aesthetic, but still a waste of image space.
What reasons are there to not use the Wikipe-tan image? Chaheel Riens (talk) 07:20, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. I also think Wikipe-tan is simply better drawn. Furthermore, the Japanese version uses that image. Benjamin (talk) 07:23, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- WP:Wikipe-tan
is not an encyclopedia article, but a page in the Wikipedia namespace.
. — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 07:26, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- So? That doesn't mean we can't use the image. Benjamin (talk) 08:31, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Per WP:SELF
self-references within Wikipedia articles to the Wikipedia project should be avoided.
We have a suitable alternative image, so there is no need to use Wikipe-tan. — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 09:41, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Per WP:SELF
- So? That doesn't mean we can't use the image. Benjamin (talk) 08:31, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think this sort of thing is what that's talking about. The image would work just fine in a non-Wikipedia format. As another example, Screenshot uses an image of Wikipedia. Benjamin (talk) 10:37, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- That's not what WP:Self is for. WP:Self is to prevent internal or recursive use of reference to Wikipedia so when it's taken out of context the subject still makes sense to somebody who may not be reading a Wikiepedia article. In this case (as an example of a catgirl,) the use of Wikipe-tan is still obvious without context or additional explanation.
- Moreover, as pointed out - the alternative is not suitable in that Wikipe-tan is a superior quality image. Wikipedia should use the best material available, and on those grounds Wikipe-tan trumps Hyou-chan.
- Precedent has already been set - the image was present in this article from at least June 2013 up until April 2019, and Wikipe-tan is the lead image in List of catgirls, and although you tried to remove it here in May 2018, it was reverted here a couple of days later. As such it has been lead image in the article for well over 12 months, and five years prior] to the blip when you removed it. You may have an argument for removal, but it seems that you're the only one who thinks that way. Chaheel Riens (talk) 11:03, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
It seems that you're the only one who thinks that way
. That's not what the edit history indicates [1]. — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 12:57, 26 June 2019 (UTC)- I am in favor of including Wikipe-tan, the image is free and high resolution. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 13:36, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
That's a broken link, but I presume it shows a diff where Wikipe-tan was removed from an unidentified article. I'll modify my statement then - you're in the minority. Chaheel Riens (talk) 19:10, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Wikipe-tan is superior, showing a more cat like pose. The image is also higher quality, and doesn't have a distracting, obscure background. Look at the hand placement as well. The hand proportions are too large, whereas Wikipe-tan's are more natural. Billhpike needs to try to gain WP:CONSENSUS before removing images that are longstanding in pages. Tutelary (talk) 21:35, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
I support the use of the Wikipe-tan image but I agree with @Billhpike: that we should avoid WP:SELF references. We can use the image without calling attention to the fact it depicts a Moe anthropomorphism of Wikipedia (it is not relevant to the topic at hand, "catgirls"). I add that Moe anthropomorphism article mentions Wikipe-tan because she is relevant to the article's topic but still does not link to WP:TAN in accordance to WP:SELF. _dk (talk) 17:01, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- We can link to Criticism of Wikipedia#wikipe-tan — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 19:41, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- Also an undue self reference and irrelevant to the topic. _dk (talk) 20:53, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Underbar dk: The problem is that I don't see how WP:SELF would apply as it doesn't address cross-space links. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:49, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Do not create links to user, WikiProject, essay or draft pages in articles, except in articles about Wikipedia itself
. — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 01:54, 28 June 2019 (UTC)- Yeah but its not a userpage or a Wikiproject, and its not an essay or draft page? - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 02:18, 28 June 2019 (UTC)
- I's fine with not including the link on this article, but it should be placed at Moe anthropomorphism. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 02:23, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Adding Information About the History of Catgirls
[edit]Hello! I'm planning on including more about the history of catgirls, since it seems their origins date back much further than the 1920s. I'll probably have to rewrite a bit of what is currently in the article, but this (link to my sandbox) is what I'm planning on adding.
I'd like to include information about Nekomusume from GeGeGe no Kitaro, as it seems like she was an important precursor to modern catgirls (considering the JP catgirl article makes references to her). However, I'm having some trouble finding English sources. Kasedori (talk) 13:06, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
Edit: I added in the history information. Anyone is free to remove it, of course! Kasedori (talk) 13:11, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
Male Variants?
[edit]Do we need a new article for catboys or just a new header?. I've noticed that they tend to symbolize very different things, especially in male gay and trans spaces. Can anyone look into this?Lurker no more (talk) 04:39, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Lurker no more: I think it would be fine to reframe this article for cat people if there were sources, and then to discuss regional and cultural differences as appropriate. We do not have a category for catboys but we have Category:Catgirls. I do not know many cat guys, but there is Cat (Red Dwarf) and Adrien Agreste. Do we have other sources? Bluerasberry (talk) 02:41, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- TV Tropes uses the term Cat Folk for this concept. Dimadick (talk) 09:11, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- A good gender-neutral alternative would be nekomimi lit. 'cat ears', already mentioned in the lead here, but used for the title at ja:猫耳. It can refer either to the characters or to their ears. –small jars

I am tired of this popping up whenever i type “cat”

Adding a full list of Catgirls
[edit]I've sorted through anime from the 1980 all the way to the 2000 and figured it'd be nice if we got a full list of every catgirl. (Included other things I've found)
1700s - The first known appearance of nekosume in plays
1924 - Suisenzuki no Yokka
1936 - Kamishibai Plays
1940 - Catwoman (First comic catgirl)
1943 - Cheetah
1949 - The King’s Tail
1968 - GeGeGe no Kitaro
1982 - Urusei Yatsura (Episode 43)
1989 - Ranma ½ (Shampoo is introduced in Episode 16 and can turn into a cat)
1990 - Kyatto Ninden Teyandee/Samurai Pizza Cats (Biggest maybe of my life, it’s a humanoid robot with cat features.), Magical Taruruto (Based and designed after a cat)
1995 - Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger
1997 - Cutie Honey Flash (Panther Zora technically has cat ears)
1998 - All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (Do I need to explain this?)
1999 - Di Gi Charat (Magical Catgirls)
1999 - I’m Gonna Be An Angel (Miruru is a catgirl)
2000 - Inuyasha
2002 - Tokyo Mew Mew
If anyone would like to change or add onto this list I think it'd be nice to have this Kat Z Edition (talk) 23:47, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
