Borking

Thanks for the heads up r.e. Bork - I added some suggestions why I feel additional explanatory text is required in the comments page, but I have not yet reverted, pending feedback from yourself and other users. The crux of my argument is that the article already contains three competing definitions of the verb, and this can only be resolved by arbitrarily selecting one and removing the others (which is unencyclopaedic) or offering a discussion of alternative uses of the verb which acknowledges and resolves the tension between the currently-offered meanings. John Lott

Check the page history for John Lott and you'll see why I think the change I reverted was done by a sockpuppet - there's an unending stream of anonymous or "single edit" users trying to remove information from the article. Hampshire College

The college's logo is orange and blue, so that could be what that's about (but I notice someone's just removed it). There's an argument for the frog as an unofficial mascot, but that's a little marginal. The basic issue is that the school doesn't really have any interscholastic sports (save Ultimate Frisbee, which is known as The Red Scare), hence no occasion for the usual trappings surrounding that. The mysterious Lott Squad with their identical lock-step mass revisions and identical refusals to discuss anything point by point and identical vague references to "previous discussions" are abusive and destructive and dedicated to establishing their deviant view of reality without compromise, and their ability to stay within the precise letter of the law in no way converts their efforts into anything positive for Wikipedia, nor does it convert their goal into anything more than obfuscation of Lott's history into a whitewash, nor does it turn them into contributing members of society who have earned our respect rather than disrespect. When I first looked at the page, all the section edit links were jumbled at the bottom, under the "see also" section. I thought it was a problem with the pictures, so I rearranged them, and the problem went away. My browser might have freaked out or something (Firefox)...either way, I'm not attached to the edit, revert it if you don't like it. Columbia University - ????

In response to your message: "Why are you removing links?" - I am completely unaware of what you are talking about. I checked over my contributions page, and don't see anything on it. I also don't even recall visiting Columbia University's page. I am extremely confused. The only university page I visited recently was Colgate University, and I didn't remove any links, I added links to newspapers while I was writing a small article on Priit Vesilind. Revision to Schlafly Biographical Information

I recently added biographical materials to and corrected a few factual errors in Wikipedia’s Phyllis Schlafly article. You deleted this information and restored the old version. What’s the thinking behind your changes?

Information on a person’s family background is certainly important in any biographical sketch. Both the Felsenthal and Critchlow biographies cited in the entry contain some information on Phyllis’ family. Rather than simply regurgitate the information from others, I undertook additional background research, principally using U.S. Census and city directory information. In my view, that’s the kind of value-added materials Wikipedia hopes to provide users.

My changes gave the following new information:

“Phyllis’ father, John Bruce Stewart, was a machinist and salesman of industrial equipment. John Bruce’s grandfather, a Presbyterian, came from Scotland to work in the coal mines of Pittston, Pennsylvania and his father, Andrew Francis, was a master mechanic with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. John Bruce lost his salesman’s job in 1932 and couldn’t find permanent work until World War II. He was granted a patent in 1944 for a rotary engine.

Phyllis’ mother, Odile B. Dodge, was the daughter of a moderately successful attorney, Earnest C. Dodge. Odile attended college and, before her marriage, worked as a teacher at Hosmer Hall, a private school for girls in St. Louis. With her father’s business suffering during the Great Depression and her husband out of work, Odile worked as a librarian and a school teacher to keep both families afloat.

John Frederic Schalfly, Jr. came from a well-to-do St. Louis family. His grandfather, August, immigrated in 1854 from Switzerland as a child. Shortly after August’s arrival, his father died and the family resettled in Carlyle, Illinois. There the three brothers worked as clerks in a local grocery store. In 1876 August’s older brother married Catharine Hubert, the daughter of the county’s wealthiest family. Shortly thereafter, the three brothers founded the firm of Schlafly Bros., which dealt in groceries, Queensware, hardware, and agricultural implements. They later sold that business and began a banking business that was to make Augustus a millionaire.”

This new information and the information from the biographies contradict your assertion that Phyllis came from “a relatively poor family.” Her family was solidly middle class, albeit struggling during the Great Depression.

Second, you reassert that Phyllis Schlafly worked at the “Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Missouri.” In fact, as I wrote, she worked at the “St. Louis Ordnance Plant, run by the United States Cartridge Company, a subsidiary of the Olin Chemical Corporation.” This was the greatest small arms plant in U.S. military history. At its peak production period in 1943 the plant had 34,338 employees on its payroll. Where did you get the LCAAP information?

Notes v References (Moritz College of Law)

You cited WP:Footnotes as saying that the section at the bottom of a page with the endnotes and references should be entitled "Notes." [2] indicates that the section should be named "Notes and references." I don't recall seeing that section label used in an article but I know there is very inconsistent usage of the specific name of the section in which references are displayed thoughout Wikipedia. And it seems that the policies are inconsistent in this area, too. Sigh...

No big deal on the Moritz College of Law article. I'll leave it alone as I'm just happy to see the references there whether they're called Notes, References, or even something else. The label isn't too important. Thanks for adding the references! --ElKevbo 06:09, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I got the chance to look at the template and do some minor corrections. However, if you want to see a template that includes scarlet or red, see the one for Cornell University. Personally, I think that template's color formatting works. Pentawing^Talk 04:52, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Alumni

I found the recent additions through the business school's list of alumni awards and the bios of the dean's advisory council. The political science department had some alumni awards also. The quarterly newsletter from the history department also lists where a lot of the their doctoral graduates are. Spartan Stadium

Is there a reason why you blanked the "memorable games" section? Furthermore the image tag for UMvsMac was changed to historical photograph. Images from MSU's archive are allowed to be published online so long as they are properly sourced.

• I was a student at Michigan State just last year and while creating another page with old pictures (some 100 of them) I actually went down to the archives office in Conrad Hall and was told by the staff that all pictures available to the public may be reproduced (as long as not for commercial gain) so long as I cite that the picture came from the archives. So as far as the picture it's certainly allowed to be used but finding the correct wikipedia tag for it is the problem. I put self created because I scanned it, but putting "historical photo" would be just as correct. Furthermore in a few years it will fall under the "author died 100 years ago" tag. So there are multiple choices, no one is absoulutely correct, but all convey the message that the picture is legit. AStudent 17:00, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Jerry Lucas

RV - Warm thanks for getting back to me with info responding to my query about Jerry Lucas and intelligence. I have fond memories about JL as a player and recall his first effort at writing a memory book (I see the list has expanded since then). I also recall stories about his enthusiasm for magic tricks, including one in which the young Jerry, excited at learning a new trick, ran to his mother shouting out, 'pick a card' , ignoring the fact that she was locked in the bathroom at the time.

JL certainly has an active mind, a rare talent at memorisation, and a keen wish to communicate his methods. So I suppose you are justified at claiming he has an unusual intelligence. What's more, the combination 'basketball and intelligence' is unusal enough to merit mention, imho.

Btw I really hadn't wanted to challenge the claim (that should be clear). I simply feel that the claim requires substantiation. It is also only fair that the person making the claim in the article take responsibility for research.

MPA / MPP and similar degrees

I have seen some discussion on these pages. But the fact is that these pages do not provide any substnatial information and need development. Your attitude and fast deleting of new additions do not enable anybody to contribute, discusss and develop these pages. I am just wandering what you suggest in this regard. HOw we can make sure that the web pages are added, developed, expanded and made a useful source of information? Your contribution is important and I think as an administrator you should facilitate discussion, not halt it. You can put individual message to me about this. First off: I am not an administrator. I have never claimed to be, nor wish to be. Second: your are encouraged to be bold when you edit pages, as am I. Additions that I see as without merit I delete. If there is some value in them, I generally try to improve them. The sections you are referring to were boosterish, not necessarilly correct, and of questionable value. I am willing to keep working on these article in any was that I can, as I encourage you to do. It also appears that Roman123 and you are the same person. Do you have a reason for doing this? Our Vandal

I've already humored him and posted external links for all of the Nobel and Pulitzer winners on the talk page, and he's still vandalized the page twice since. This guy is beyond redemption and IMO is somewhat disturbed emotionally. The fact is that no other alumni page verifies every single entry, nor should we have to. I might add this guy has no apparent problem with Nobel sections on other university alumni pages. If this guy has a question about someone, he can bring it up for discussion on the talk page. Nobody should have to waste time jumping through hoops to satisfy the needs of a known and repeated vandal. Besides, it's not the validity or the verifiability of these people that's driving this guy. It's their very existence--and the lack of similar people at you know where--that is motivating him, and as such no amount of pandering is going to satisfy him.--Sam Harmon 15:22, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I would suggest posting the verifications on the talk page for a couple of reasons: not cluttering up the main article and not setting a precedent. My guess is that if he expands his focus it will only be to the more prominent/prestigious entries. If you remember, he once vandalized the academia section by removing only the entries from prestigious universities while leaving the others in place. Any guesses as to his underlying motivation? BTW, all of the people that I found were done through various web searches. As to motivations, one can only speculate. I am surprised that the editor went to the length of registering as a user and writing some text on his user page. Only time will tell what he intends. Yeah, I'm in your boat: I find the topic interesting but have nothing personal at stake in whether Rutgers declined membership to the Ivy League. And now I'm intrigued about this dilemma I'd never considered, that reporters would start using Wikipedia as a source without mentioning it, and that we now have to ask our sources about their sources because it might be us. All of the Big Ten team categories plus three articles are now under the Big Ten Conference football category, which is the more appropriate title. Since about 95% of the articles listed under Big Ten Football already fell under one or more of the team categories, listing them in this category became redundant. I understand that you simply responded to Analogue Kid's request for the move, but the issue was not nearly resolved and the failure to get discussion in the week between Christmas and New Years is unsurprising. NCAA Division I-A national football championship

Rkevins82: You are probably right - the text in the description box and in the rest of that section of the article is not completely clear and you could arguably justify Wisconsin being on the list. I think this is just another example of the shortcomings of the way that the article is structured and written. Unfortunately, there are no easy solutions. I am actually working on an idea that may "fix" this problem and I am relunctant to change any text until I've thought completely through the issues. Whatever I propose will be posted on WP:CFB, where there is already a lengthy debate on national titles. If you happen to go read that, what I am working on now is another proposal that differs from the ones aleady there. Csuri family dispute

I am happy to see that two parties in the Csuri family dispute have reconciled. From your comments on the other party's user page, I believe that you actually intervened in the dispute due to a message that I posted on the Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard. I am actually a third party, a recently new editor, that was unsure of how to handle a the previous dispute of whether the unsourced family relationships should be part of the encyclopedic entry for Csuri. I am sorry that there was a misunderstanding when you intervened to correct the problem. The party that I'm refering to (who wishes to be anonymous at this point), I believe was not responsible for posting the family information in the first place, but I believe was part of a revert war to remove the information anonymously, and had previously not stated reasons for the removal. I hope that this concludes the dispute. The Ongoing Troy Smith Height Controversy

On the discussion page, as you are already aware, there is an ongoing debate about how to list him. I'm sticking to my guns on the issue, for all the reasons that I mentioned in the most recent of my posts there. But, if there is one reason that should trump the rest, it is this issue: official media guides are what every other source that I can find use. I'm not 100% sure if you and I are in agreement on the matter, but I would ask that you please keep an eye on the article and make sure that it remains as it has been (6'1, 215) at least until he is drafted, and then let whomever Smith plays for list his measurements as whatever they see fit. The funny part about this whole stupid issue (yes, of course I realize it is petty!) is that no one would even bother if they weren't some rival team's fans hating on the guy. There are a whole lot of players whose heights and weights are listed as what could be deemed as inaccurate. Anyways, thanks. Ryecatcher773 17:00, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Big Ten newsletter, February 2007

Hello all Big Ten Wikipedians, here's the manual newsletter (becuase I suck with templates :P) on February. As it says on the Wikiproject, this month's main article is the Big Ten Conference, primarily because that article needs so much help right now. Everything seems to be going well so far. I'd be helping more but I had other things I was doing. Glad to see a lot of members joining though. I'm thinking of starting an assessment division of our own, but I'm not sure yet. Give me your opinions on if we should start tagging people as well btw. If you guys wish to start tagging college presidents of them, that would be a good start. RE: Skopp and Matt Drudge

As I am a new and rather inexperienced Wikipedian, I am asking for your advice on how to deal with Skopp. You seemed to be a cooler head in the discussion, so how do you feel he should be dealt with? His "contributions" to the Drudge discussion page are far past the "line" of personal attacks. His edits clearly violate WP:NPOV. He seems to be a rogue editor of sorts.
