Usage of ampersand.
[edit]http://www.betterwritingskills.com/tip-w002.html
The ampersand (&) was used to replace nearly every instance of "and" in a section of the article.
Not only was this a trivial replacement, but it also caused me to look it up for correct usage (I hate to correct something and find myself being the one that's incorrect).

Mileage
[edit]I'm putting a note here for lack of a better place. Many of the mileages in the various LIRR articles appear to be calculated based on Jamaica being 9.3 miles from Penn. I'm pretty sure that's wrong and it's actually 11.3 miles. See this employee timetable, various official guides, and this article in Newsday. If you measure it as the crow flies 9.3 miles doesn't quite clear the East River. 9.3 is the distance from Atlantic Terminal to Jamaica or from Jamaica to Long Island City via the Main Line. Note also that in official publications Montauk Branch mileage appears to be calculated based on Long Island City (not via the Main Line), which is 9.0 miles. Mackensen (talk) 12:12, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- I realize we sourced these mileages from the MTA itself, but I'm pretty sure the official site is simply wrong. See [1], which says Kew Gardens is 7.7 miles from Penn. It's clearly not; any official guide will tell you that it's 9.7 (allowing for the extra two miles between Long Island City and Penn). Perhaps I'm missing something obvious? Mackensen (talk) 12:30, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting. My comment on the other page was more about needing sources than "anyone can see" which is OR and not valid for Wikipedia. But now that you've found a few, I have a theory.
- Technically, the LIRR Main Line ends at LIC, the original western terminal of the entire railroad. not NYP, and all LIRR mile markers along the tracks are measured from there, not Penn Station. So the website mistakenly using the distances from LIC instead of from Penn seems to be a possibility. Or perhaps it's not them, it's us. The note saying that the mileage is from Penn Station is, simply put, wrong. They're the distances from LIC. Amend the note, and everything is correct. oknazevad (talk) 14:10, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I think you're right. The mileage is correct...for LIC. The MTA website is wrong inasmuch as it says it's for Penn. The Montauk Branch is a whole other matter; I haven't looked yet to see what numbers the MTA gives. I think every line/branch article will have to be checked. I'll also be going through station articles to populate a sourced distance number, making it clear what the number is for, which should help in the future. If anyone has a good contact at the MTA we should reach out to them as well. Mackensen (talk) 14:14, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'd say Montauk Line distances are fine so long as the notes are also corrected as the distance from LIC to Jamaica is the same. The distance via the Lower Montauk is no longer relevant as the Lower Montauk is not just no longer in passenger rail use, it's no longer legal for the LIRR to move passenger equipment over those tracks.
- I just find it strange that Atlantic Terminal really is 9.3 miles from Jamaica. But maybe that's just me. oknazevad (talk) 15:05, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

No, that struck me too. I agree that the distance via Lower Montauk isn't relevant from a passenger perspective, but the mileage for the Montauk branch is still calculated that way so I think that's what we should use. It's also still the number used on the MTA website, see St. Albans. 11.8 is the distance from St. Albans to LIC via Lower Montauk. Mackensen (talk) 18:23, 4 August 2022 (UTC)- Being that's the case, then I can see including it. oknazevad (talk) 20:32, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

I've opened a support request with the MTA about this issue Mackensen (talk) 13:56, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- Did you ever hear back from them on it? I doubt very much that they would give it much mind. oknazevad (talk) 09:36, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- I did, in fact, get a response about a week ago, confirming that the mileage is from LIC (not Long Island City itself, but close enough). Mackensen (talk) 10:09, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Map Update (2023)
[edit]I have marked this article as needing a map as the current one is outdated with the route to Grand Central not being shown. Not majorly important, but still should be there. --98.113.199.235 (talk) 14:21, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
Can someone fix the template for the port Washington branch? I tried and it’s not working. --100.37.252.224 (talk) 14:56, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- I just tried fixing it and it didn’t work. Requesting help from someone who knows how to fix that template. --IndustryPlantCooper (talk) 17:16, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Its impossible --100.37.252.224 (talk) 04:12, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Done, see here. Cards84664 06:27, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks again. It looks like all the other templates look okay too. --IndustryPlantCooper (talk) 16:15, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Lead images
[edit]I think we should replace the images in the lead section infobox for more recent ones i.e. showcasing the M9. I’m pretty sure in the first image is Stewart Manor station prior to its renovations. Just a thought. Ded Meem (talk) 18:43, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Probably not a bad idea. I'll also note that the second image depicts a construction reroute, not regularly scheduled diesel (or dual-mode) service. Complex/Rational 20:20, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
