Thanks for your warm welcome, jengod!

[edit]

What a nice surprise to have your welcome appear so quickly on my User Talk page (within a couple of hours of my becoming a Wikipedian and starting to draft "My page"). I hope to be able to contribute regularly. I like your username: is there a story behind it? (It caught my eye because my business phone number spells "GOD-EDIT"--I tell clients that I want them to remember me whenever they think, "Oh God, we need an editor!" Unverified images

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{PD-self}} if you wish to release your own work to the public domain, {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 21:17, Dec 25, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

Another request from Dralwik

[edit]

Hey Jengod, I found another list of U.S. county name origins, unfortunately for another red state! Would North Dakota be too much for you? Thanks, its a huge help on the list of all 3086 U.S. county name etymologies. To try and make it up for you, I'm activating your List of U.S. counties named after personal first names link for you. Dralwik 03:37, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Some comments from Dralwik

[edit]

Hi Jengod. About the red states and their counties, every single blue state with more than an handful of counties is finished, thus leaving only the red states. Isn't life funny? Joyeux Noël (French for Merry Christmas) ! Dralwik 01:40, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Political party color codes

[edit]

Hi, I based my color choices on the ones someone else established at President of the United States. For the American Party, I chose the nice-looking green color arbitrarily. There's no color guide that I know of, and the colors are mostly arbitrary (except for red/blue). For California, there was "Lecompton Democrat" and "Unionist Republican" and I'm not sure what the difference is between those and the normal Democrat/Republican, so I used the standard red/blue colors. So, for that oddball third-party, I'd just go with some other color with contrast that looks aesthetically pleasing. For the military/provisional, I suppose white, gray, or some other neutral color is best. --Minesweeper 07:48, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Dralwik returns

[edit]

Hey, Jengod. I know the Tennessee county etymology source and was going to ask you to create the list for me, but you beat me to it! If I find any more county name lists for remaining states, I'll tell you. I keep trying to find South Dakota c. n. e.s (county name etymologies); but I can't find them on the Internet. I'd like to hear your opinion on the alphabetical list of U.S. county name etymologies. Lastly, I found an interesting page on the largest diamond in the universe, if you like minerals. Stub removal notice

[edit]

Aloha. In the process of cleaning up Category:Stub I have removed the stub messages from your backup copies of two articles, User:Jengod/Ebenezer R. Hoar, and User:Jengod/Nicholas Katzenbach. I have also changed the current article for Ebenezer R. Hoar to a people stub. I hope this doesn't present a problem. Mahalo. --Viriditas | Talk 06:29, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Image tagging

[edit]

Hello! I'm been image tagging, and I came across Image:California poppies.jpg and Image:Californiapostcard.jpg. They both seem to be old postcards. Do you know how old they are? Thanks, – Quadell (talk) (help) 18:11, Jan 19, 2005 (UTC)

Dralwik again

[edit]

Hey, Jengod, I found county name origins for South Dakota now! See here, just go to the little "select county" thing in the top right corner. There are few counties (Buffalo, i.e.) with no origin, just leave them blank and I'll see what I can find. Thanks. Dralwik 00:33, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Dralwik back

[edit]

Jengod, I know I'm throwing county origins at you, but here is Mississippi's. Thanks, Dralwik 18:11, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi - You edited Death Valley National Park before so I'd like you to express your opinion on its featured article candidacy if you have a spare moment. :) --mav 05:10, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I can't get the picture you added to load either on this page or on the image page -is it just my loosy internet connection or is something wrong? Rmhermen 16:37, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)

Stub sorting guidelines

[edit]

I sincerely believe that we really need to lay down the law in stub sorting, and really provide a guideline. I believe that we should all attempt to reach a general consensus by April 2, 2005 in a set of rules that we can follow. Once we have built a set of guidelines, we can formally create a policy out of those guidelines. We need to define what a specialized topic stub is, how many articles it should cover, when is it appropriate to create it, what defines its need for its creation, what defines its need for deletion, what criteria it should follow, what are the general steps should one take when sorting a stub, whether or not to start using subst: for all templates, whether or not use subst: for all templates created by the meta-templates, and any other matters that may come up in consideration. I thank jag123 for initially creating the subpage for the project at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. Even though they have been discussed, I feel that we really need to confirm everything. For that, we should discuss each issue with its own sections, and raise a list of issues that we need to nail down before really continuing on. The English Wikipedia is nearly at 500k articles. Either the MediaWiki software needs to handle stubs such that they can be found with a simple union of categories, or the sorting is done manually by Wikipedians. Personally, I think the latter is less taxing on the server load, especially when we use subst:, which I think would help the Wikipedia out, performance wise. Please make your comments at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. I apologize for making this somewhat of a spam notice, but since the project has more members, the project can finally decide on these important issues at hand. -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:22, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Chef's knives

[edit]

Jengod, I'm not sure you saw the note I put into the discussion page. I started out page on Chef's knives and paused (not wanting to wait for the oh-so-looooooong page refreshes). Lots of changes got made over the next couple of hours.  :-)

The page as it exists at this moment is pretty incoherent. The original words were about Chef's knives, but somebody (I didn't follow the track back) decided Kitchen knives was better, and defined kitchen knives to include even cutlery for the table. This makes a lot of the wording pretty silly (nobody hot-forges a butter knife, and they call it silverware, not high-carbon steelware, for a reason).  :-)

Anyway, I want to re-enforce my request for a Kitchen knives article, as well as some individual articles. Can you give me your feedback on the Kitchen knives discussion page, please?

Erie Triangle

[edit]

Forgive me if I'm reading the version history incorrectly, but I'm a little puzzled about a reversion on the Erie Triangle article. It looks to me like you did a minor edit on Jan 21st, and but then it looks like there's a reversion to a Jan 8th version after that with no edit comments. Was there a reason to revert that just wasn't commented on, was it an accident or am I just totally misreading this? EvilSuggestions 07:32, 2005 Apr 5 (UTC)

Category:U.S. history images

[edit]

I have been looking at categorization in US history and noticing that it looks pretty incomplete. In particular, the Category:U.S. history images is all but empty. I noticed that you added Category:National Atlas territorial expansion maps to the Image:Map of territorial growth 1775.jpg. I was going to add Category:U.S. history images to it as well, but then realized it might be better to make Category:National Atlas territorial expansion maps a subcategory to Category:U.S. history images instead.

Could you confirm that this is the right approach? I'm finding the whole categorization issue more than a bit puzzling. Should I be very cautious adding categories, or just reasonably careful?

Similarly, it would seem obvious that Category:U.S. National Historic Sites should be a sub-category of Category:United States history but it's not. Is there a reason? Or can I go ahead and add it?

TIA, Mwanner 14:57, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. Ultimately, I replaced Category:United States history with Category:U.S. history images in Category:Historical maps of the United States. The effect is to populate "US hist images" but still leave "hist maps of US" linked to "US hist" only now it passes through "US hist images" to get there.
And thanks for the advice: you're right-- it's Wikipedia-- if it's wrong, someone will notice and fix it, and we'll all have learned something.
Thanks much, Mwanner 23:40, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)
No, it's not patronizing, though I do understand the hierarchical aspect of categories (I was puzzled to find that there's nothing enforcing a hierarchical structure). What was throwing me was the bottom up way they come together, combined with the behind-the-scenes delayed process that pulls them together. It seems weird that if you edit a category, you can't see any of its constituents. It doesn't help that just trying to look at a category can take forever (or fail altogether) when the system is slow. Anyway, it makes much more sense now. Also, from making a few mistakes of my own, I've come to understand why some of the category assignments look so strange.
So I made the changes I mentioned yesterday, and I have added a couple of hundred images to Category:U.S. history images and just maybe I'll finish the task someday (God willin' an' the creek don't rise).
Thanks again, Mwanner 20:49, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

And another thing...

[edit]

Perhaps I could interest you in taking a look at a user and at least one of his articles? (See, this is what comes of your choice of username-- makes you seem both omniscient/all powerful and approachable.)

Anyway, the article that caught my eye is Claudius Smith which was interesting/odd enough to get me looking at the author, User:WB2. The former is very well written, but rather more argumentative than your typical encyclopedia article. If it doesn't draw you in, at least skip down to the concluding para, and the fact that it is signed, and then check out the lengthy References and "For Discussion" sections.

The author's user page starts off "I don't write a lot, but I do a lot of research, and the articles that I print or will be printing are original with MUCH of the information completely unavailable anywhere else ..."

Now my read of all this is that you've got a potentially great contributor, if he can be tamed. But he also strikes me as likely to be thin-skinned. Perhaps you've had some experience turning this sort away from the dark side? Or know someone else who might want to work with him? I only know that I'm not real good at dealing with the type.

TIA, -- Mwanner 23:13, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

No, I know about No original research... in this case it's a question of how to lay it on him without setting off an immediate "Screw that" reaction. He's only been contributing as WB2 since April 10, though it looks like he might have been an unregistered user for a few weeks before that. In any case, seems to me he still falls under the "be kind to new users" policy. Mwanner 23:31, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

expos/nationals debate

[edit]

There is a major debate going on, and I wondered if you might want to chime in. The debate involves how to deal with franchise moves in baseball. The question is whether Montréal Expos should be its own article or if it should redirect to Washington Nationals. All other instances of franchise moves in MLB redirect the old team name to the new team name, and the history of the franchise is covered within the new team name (for MLB, NBA and NFL examples, see here. Some people are confused and think the Expos and the Nats are different teams. Some people don't want to upset Canadian readers.

Indeed, the Washington Nationals are not a new team - the Montreal Expos franchise has moved to Washington, and the old franchise name should redirect to the new franchise name, just like the 20+ instances of this occuring in Wikipedia. For example, Brooklyn Dodger history resides in the Los Angeles Dodgers article. New York Giants history, including the Shot Heard 'Round the World, resides in the San Francisco Giants article.

If you have the time, maybe you could chime in on the conversation there, Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Montréal Expos. Kingturtle 23:16, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

history in digital projects

[edit]

I’m an historian working at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/) and we are very interested in digital historical works, including people writing history on Wikipedia. We’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on articles in Wikipedia, in connection with a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement. I've sent you a message to your email account as well hoping to reach you. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.

Thanks for your consideration.

Los Angeles County

[edit]

I don't know why you deleted Topanga and Marina Del Rey from the L.A. County list of census-designated places; I'm adding them back.

If you look at any high-quality street map that shows city boundaries (like the ones real estate agents use), it is very clear that both Topanga and Marina Del Rey do not lie in any city. Furthermore, if you look at the Web sites for Los Angeles County government agencies, they are clearly under the impression that they have direct jurisdiction over those areas. Plus, the entrance signs to Marina Del Rey are marked "County of Los Angeles."

Brazil-geo-stub

[edit]

Hi Jengod - I've just removed the icon you added to {{Brazil-geo-stub}}. There are two reasons - firstly, the icons being used have, for the most part, been decided after fairly lengthy discussion (unless there is reason not to, maps are generally used for geographical stubs. This is the reason that it says at the top of the lists of stub templates not to change icons without consulting the stub-sorting wikiproject first. The second reason - and the reason I've removed the icon entirely, is that icons are generally being removed from heavy use templates because of server proplems (see [[2]] for details). Most of the icons still in use on stub templates are either on low-use cateories, or when the icons add more information about the categories (like on the five African regional geography stubs).
