[edit]- 1842 – The Bristol and Exeter Railway extension to Taunton opens.
- 1845 – Boston and Maine Railroad opens the extension over the former Boston and Maine Railroad Extension line between Wilmington and Boston.
- 1846 – The Leeds and Bradford Railway opens between Leeds and Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.
- 1850 – Joseph Hamilton Beattie succeeds John Viret Gooch as locomotive engineer for London and South Western Railway.
- 1862 –
- The Pacific Railroad Act authorizing construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad is signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln.
- The Union Pacific Railroad is incorporated.
- Eastern Counties Railway and several smaller railways in England are merged to form Great Eastern Railway.[1]
- 1883 – Fearnall Heath railway station in England is renamed to Fernhill Heath railway station.[2]
- 1897 – The Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railroad is reorganized as the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway Company (later to become the Monon Railroad)
20th century
[edit]- 1902 – Oliver Robert Hawke Bury becomes General Manager of the Great Northern Railway in England.
- 1918 – New York City Subway's IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line extension to South Ferry opens, with shuttle service between Wall Street and Chambers Street.
- 1922 – The Great Railroad Strike of 1922 begins in the United States, coinciding with a reduction in railroad shop wages by seven cents per day mandated by the Railroad Labor Board.
- 1933 – New York City Subway's IND Concourse Line opens.
- 1968 – The Chicago Great Western Railway is merged into the Chicago and North Western Railway to avoid bankruptcy.
- 1979 – The former Nickey line junction with the Midland Main Line at Harpenden Junction is severed.[3]
- 1992 – JR East introduces the Yamagata Shinkansen, the first mini-shinkansen service, on the Ōu Main Line connecting Fukushima and Yamagata.
- 2000 – The Øresund Bridge is inaugurated between Malmö in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark.
21st century
[edit]- 2001 – Elipsos, a joint venture of SNCF (France) and RENFE (Spain), is created to handle the logistics of night trains between the two systems.
- 2002 –
- Norges Statsbaner is privatised under the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications.
- The railroad dining car catering services of Mitropa, which was founded in 1916, are handed over to DB Reise & Touristik AG, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn.
- 2005 –
- Indian Railways inaugurates two new Shatabdi Express passenger trains, one between Chennai and Bangalore and a new Jan-Shatabdi Express between Madgaon and Mangalore.
- Connex takes over the contract to operate Metrolink in Southern California from its previous operator, Amtrak.[4]
