MfD nomination of Template:User prog-0

[edit]

Template:User prog-0, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Template:User prog-0 and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Template:User prog-0 during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. RL0919 (talk) 00:42, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"User JzG"

[edit]

Hi, I just replied to you [1] as follows: Evidence by "JzG" at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Chabad movement/Evidence#Evidence presented by JzG is signed by "Guy" but that redirects to User talk:JzG while "JzG's" talk page goes to User:JzG/help that then redirects to Help:Contents. So that's how I got there. Maybe I bumped into this blimp and I give you credit for spotting this problem. What going on here? Thanks for looking into this confusion. Maybe "JzG" and "Guy" need to be blocked for vandalism, and if not corrected. IZAK (talk) 07:48, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ben Gillies

[edit]

Hi There. This was written about me (this is Ben Gillies) - After breaking up with his former fiance, Ben in a moment of vulnerability, sought guidance from a Newcastle psychic. This psychic was previously accused in local papers for fame-seeking and fraud, but was able to give Ben the nurturing he desired. Recently they have become engaged.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ben_Gillies&oldid=349642745

I don't know where this information came from but it is total crap- Is it possible to find out? I would appreciate the help.

As for what I added, it IS truth, so if I add it again could you please not remove it or block me?

Thanks Ben —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asrtoboy1980 (talkcontribs) 00:37, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are you 124.149.127.155? If so, I removed that material because it was not encyclopedic in tone and possibly could not be verified.
As for the total crap, it came from 83.71.7.178 (diff). Currently the article doesn't have that information, but it can be removed from the page history by following the procedure at Wikipedia:Requests for oversight.--Commander Keane (talk) 06:36, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Aurora (rock band), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Aurora (rock band). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 19:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Er, this is a DAB page you started that someone hijacked to turn into an article, which I then nominated. Twinkle found you as the page creator but it's nothing to worry about.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 19:06, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He he, no worries. Had me a bit worried for a second though :P --Commander Keane (talk) 02:06, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Aurora (rock band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Are you talking about the article Ram (actor)? I am watching that article so I will try to prevent any problems. Make comments on the "discussion" page of the article if there are problems. You could request protection at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, but I don't think that is necessary yet.--Commander Keane (talk) 00:49, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Android issue

[edit]

Hi

I have just returned after a little wikibreak of 10 days and wondered what the state of affairs was on the Android/Android (robot)/Android (os) issue ? (did it go to any other areas for discussion etc)

I am exploring the avenue of Robotics articles being included on the vital articles lists and Android is one of them - the thought of having to change all those links back is not a very pleasing one :¬(

thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 02:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm, well I stepped in and I don't think I should close the discussion at Talk:Android_(robot)#Propose_rename_page_to:_Android_.28robot.29. I will informally ask an admin to close the discussion and see what happens.--Commander Keane (talk) 03:11, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New to Wiki

[edit]

I am new to Wiki, at least in terms of adding, editing, providing sources, etc. I am looking for a bit of input and guidance. I will review all of the material regarding contributions but thought that I would touch base for a bit of "quick start" input to try to ensure that I do not stumble, bumble, violate guidelines or otherwise gum up the works.

Specifically, I have been involved with the AuSable River Canoe Marathon for over 30 years, formed the non-profit organization that stages the race, was Chairman for a number of years, generated the vast majority of the press releases for the event, coordinated television coverage including satellite uplinks, etc.

I am also one of three people responsible for creating and coordinating The Triple Crown of Canoe Racing, mentioned on the above page and am well versed in all three races which comprise the Triple Crown.

I would like to begin: 1] contributing to the AuSable River Canoe Marathon page. 2] contributing the page for Serge Corbin, the top marathon canoe racer who has competed in all of the Triple Crown races, among many others, and with whom I am personally acquainted 3] create and contribute to a page for The Triple Crown of Canoe Racing 4] possibly create and contribute to pages for the other two races in the Triple Crown, the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, and la Classique de Canots, which are both mentioned on the page for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon (above).

In terms of providing reliable sources & verifiability and, also, with regard to neutral point of view and no original research, I am not sure exactly how to proceed as I am the one who wrote the releases and articles that appeared in print.

Thanks in advance for your input. Swiss54 (talk) 18:36, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. The idea is that "Do not edit Wikipedia to promote your own interests, or those of other individuals or of organizations, including employers, unless you are certain that a neutral editor would agree that your edits are in the best interest of Wikipedia."
Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard can be used to "ask for advice or get help with proposed article changes if you are affected by a conflict of interest. Propose changes at the article talk page, and then leave a message here if more neutral editors are needed to establish consensus."
So I think you can make draft edits and then me or someone at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard will look at the draft and approve it. Draft on the article talk pages, eg Talk:Au Sable River Canoe Marathon. --Commander Keane (talk) 02:49, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I wish you had taken a bit of a look at the history of the article before autoconfirming the request. There is a reason the editor is using an offline source - because the claim is nonsense from start to finish and is consistent with the nonsense that has been added earlier. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 04:28, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to update Template:POTD protected?

[edit]

If you go to Wikipedia:Picture of the day/September 2011 and the picture has already been chosen, then underneath the picture there are some links - one of them will say "create protected version" if it hasn't been created already. Once you click that link it will create a new version and you'll need to completely delete the first line and replace it with the line it says (I can't remember what it is right now) - but the instructions are pretty clear. Sorry for vague instructions but I don't do it that often and I have to follow the directions and be sure I have it right each time. If a picture hasn't been selected yet, I'm not sure what to do. --Trödel 11:56, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you :-) --Commander Keane (talk) 00:03, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Antiope (DC Comics) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The fictional character does not meet the general notability guideline and, without reception and significance in reliable secondary sources independent of the subject, the topic of the article is not suitable for Wikipedia as a stand-alone article since it falls into WP:IINFO.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ruby Tuesday (disambiguation), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. 76.110.65.48 (talk) 23:54, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Commander Keane,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 02:40, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Help Project Newsletter
Issue I - May 2012
Project news
  • the wub has been appointed as a Wikimedia Community Fellow to lead a data-driven improvement of the English Wikipedia's help documentation, and will be working closely with the Help Project. You can read more about his plans at Wikipedia:Help Project/Community fellowship or in this Signpost article, and he has just released a first report on progress so far.
  • The project's pages have had a major redesign, introducing tabs in order to make them more usable. If you haven't stopped by recently then check them out!
  • A table of statistics is now available for all pages in Category:WikiProject Help Project, this includes page views, word counts and a variety of readability scores. This should be helpful in prioritising improvement work and finding redundant pages.
  • {{Breadcrumb2}} is a new template for making attractive navigational breadcrumbs. This may be useful for linking help pages.
  • This newsletter was started :-)
From the editor

Hi, and welcome to the first issue of the Help Project newsletter! This is a new monthly initiative to keep project members and the wider community informed about our work to improve Wikipedia's help pages. Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter.

I've initially sent this to all existing members of the project, if you don't wish to receive the newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name. Conversely if you've just stumbled on this newsletter (perhaps through talk page stalking) and want to receive it in future then please feel free to sign up!

Should Conklin Guitars be undeleted?

[edit]

While following up red links, I found that Conklin Guitars is linked to by four other pages, but states "02:12, 31 December 2006 Pilotguy (talk | contribs) deleted page Conklin Guitars (Deleting page - reason was: "Article about a non-notable individual, band, service, website or other entity" using NPWatcher)"

I see they make/made 7 string bass guitars, which makes them very unusual and probably notable. However, I know nothing else about them, and since I am not an admin on this project, I can't read the deleted article to see if it is worth having.

As you know, Pilotguy is now inactive, and I noticed you offered to help another editor who had tried to contact him. Please would you check the previous deleted article (or pass to someone who can) and do whatever is appropriate. No need to reply. Thanks Enginear (talk) 01:24, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if this was the correct protocol, but I undeleted the article, as it looks ok to me. thanks for bringing it to my attention.--Commander Keane (talk) 02:14, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:RoyalPerthYachtClubFlag1.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:RoyalPerthYachtClubFlag1.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 19:58, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help!

[edit]

I've been unable to log into Wikipedia as registered user/editor for months. I have tried all of my usual passwords, and when they haven't worked I've used the "forgot my password" link. A box pops up telling me that an email has been sent to allow me to change my password, but it never actually shows up at my email inbox (or spam folder or anywhere else). I feel like I've picked through the website with a fine toothed comb but haven't found any solutions. Your name was attached to a message on MY talk page welcoming me to wikipedia all those years ago. I would appreciate if you might be able to assist me in getting registered again. re: Searching and decapitation

[edit]

Hi, CK. Glad to hear you find my topic interesting. I'm not sure what you're referring to with the decapiation, I don't remember saying it and I can't find the term "decapitate" on my talk page. The anonymous user was me, I was just too lazy to log in that day. Anybody from any IP can change things without logging in, it makes fixing things easy. If I see a quick grammar error and I'm not logged in its much easier to just fix it there than log in then fix it. (The system even keeps automatic user pages for people from an IP if they make changes over a period of time and are too lazy to create an account.) I saw a user once get in trouble because his account was suspended but they were making changes without logging in, but they traced the IP and suspended him for another month. Nice talking with you. Any time you want me to see a post/reply of yours that's not on my talk page, please png me by using the code [[User:Squish7|Squish7]], somewhere in your message, such as here, or in the discussion I started. I don't diligently monitor other pages. Squish7 (talk) 14:50, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Top Banana (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. damiens.rf 16:40, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Commander Keane. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

QLD biography suggestions

[edit]

Most of our articles on Qld premiers are stub/start class yet many do have biographies - see this list but ignore Macbeth which Trove returns in response to any query! The one that immediately jumped to my mind is Thomas McIlwraith, as I know Denver Beanland published a book on him a few years ago called Queensland Caesar (or something like that). The ideal premier for your purposes is a dead one so no BLP issues, has some book biographies and lived and died before 1955 meaning lots of digitized newspaper coverage in Trove to draw on for citations. Others might be T. J. Ryan or Ted Theodore, early Labour premiers with interesting stories eg Mungana affair. 13:26, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Speaking of the Mungana affair, William McCormack is a really minimal article. Lots of scope to improve this one.Kerry (talk) 13:34, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is a recent PhD thesis on the Mungana affair and on McCormack's central role in it. See Here Kerry (talk) 13:40, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If premiers don't interest you, John Clements Wickham has an unimpressive article for a very interesting life; his time in Queensland is particularly poorly covered in the Wikipedia article. Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill is named after him. Or John Moffat (mining pioneer) or James Tyson should be better covered than they are. They were very successful in mining and pastoralist respectively. Kerry (talk) 14:45, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also look at this list I drew up a while ago for people and organisations in the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame (which is an initiative involving the State Library of Queensland). You might find something to interest you there. Kerry (talk) 14:45, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Kerry, Mungana affair looks perfect.--Commander Keane (talk) 08:16, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Commander Keane.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering why you removed links to the ships in the table. Is there some rule for this?

From Wikipedia Both internal and external links allow users of the website to navigate to another web page or resource. This is the basis or founding idea or principal behind the internet. That users can navigate from one resource to another by clicking on hyperlinks. Internal links help users navigate the same website, whereas external links generally take users to a different webpage or website.

Both internal and external links help users surf the internet as well as having Search engine optimization value. Internal linking allows for good website nagivation and structure and allows search engines to crawl or spider websites.[2]

Hi 2015Cruiser! Firstly, thank you for your contributions to Viking Cruises - it is an interesting topic. Also, thanks for asking here rather than blindly reverting :-) That is an interesting quote above from Internal link, but that is not a Wikipedia guideline. Wikipedia:External links has some guidance, including "they should not normally be placed in the body of an article". Really I was just applying Ignore all rules, I found the links repetitive and superfluous - if a reader wants to visit Viking's official website they can use the link in the infobox or External links section. However, if you want to make an arguement to include the links I am happy to listen. Probably Talk:Viking Cruises is the best place for that.--Commander Keane (talk) 06:47, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Microphone cover

[edit]

I've had luck with a homemade version, that's just a paper towel covering the microphone, taped in place. Seems to stop wind noise and also filters out high frequencies, like when you say S's. The more layers of paper towel, the more filtering you get. In this respect, it's adjustable in a way a commercial filter may not be. Also keeps spit out. Maybe it will work for you, maybe not, but it's something to try before spending money on one. SinisterLefty (talk) 12:41, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Several people have asked on the Help Desk why they can't get rid of the banners even if they give. This seems to be one for the FAQs, but there's no FAQ for giving. Since you created the first FAQ page, I was thinking you might have some idea how to accomplish this.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:48, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My suggestion would be either add a link to m:Donations FAQ as an answer to a question on Wikipedia:FAQ or create a link to m:Donations FAQ at Wikipedia:FAQ/Index. Be bold.--Commander Keane (talk) 01:43, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Wavelength-division multiple access requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 12:28, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Notice

The article OSCE (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This disambiguation page contains the primary topic and one other topic for the ambiguous title and no other topics can be found within a reasonable time.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:02, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder

[edit]

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:20, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Commander Keane, I like your audio sample voices for many words like "caught and bowled" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:En-au-caught_and_bowled.ogg), "hit the bricks" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:En-au-hit_the_bricks.ogg) and so many. Your contributions gives so much help to everyone and you will always do it. Thank you so much for that. Also, your Australian accent gives so much insight about how the word is pronounced in your accent because for me, it a whole different accent from American or British. Also, Your Aussie voice gives even a better feeling at the word as you are one of very few Aussies contributing on audio samples. Man, you rock. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,
