[edit]This should be expanded to discuss Canadian system and other pictorial cancellations. --Daniel C. Boyer 16:20, 12 Mar 2004 (UTC)
The complexity of this subject makes it difficult to properly approach. Some machine cancels or hand cancels used daily by post offices or stations (chiefly in countries other than the United States) are pictorial, but are they so called? Officially in the United States, pictorial cancellations commemorate specific events at temporary stations, but there are slugs with pictures, such as the "Spirit" and "Cat in the Hat" slugs. And so forth. --Daniel C. Boyer 18:59, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)
In France, illustrated "Flammes postales" are collected. During 20th Century until 2007, they were for touristic, social or postal use, temporary or permanently. See the article in French for more intel and the last two external links at the end to see lots of examples of French pictorial cancellation. Sebjarod 19:15, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
