Thank you
[edit]For moving the comments at the evidence page - I am losing my ability to handle the situation, and appreciate very much your help. I trust you will let me know if I am mishandling the situation, or using the arbitration process improperly. I wish you luck, also, in the current election, and regardless of its outcome, I hope you know that your efforts for this project are appreciated hugely by many, of whom I am one. Have a fine day, and happy editing, Jwrosenzweig 16:27, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- You are welcome, and thank you for the compliment. :) Hopefully this case will be over soon - please bear with us. We often move slowly but I guess most other people would too if they had the power to ban people. This is something we have to do right. --mav
- I do understand. I'm curious, though. In your vote on MNH's second go-round, you noted "we should work fast on this one". What criteria make you feel this urgency? I don't want you to think I'm starting an argument or claiming you're wrong about it -- I'm just curious. From my perspective, MNH's NPOV problems are serious and in need of attention, but open personal attacks, verbal abuse, and legal threats are a more urgent matter (a similar combination seemed to speed Plautus Satire through). Is there something about Irismeister's case that causes it to move more slowly than the standard arbitration? Or is there something about MNH's case that really does heighten the urgency? I'm getting interested in the arbitration process (I secretly....well, not so secret now, I guess....am wondering if I should consider putting myself forth as a candidate in the next election for AC), and am curious about your perspective on this. Has the AC reached a certain understanding about what types of behavior are most threatening to the project, or most in need of swift dealing? If you don't feel comfortable talking about it, considering I am currently before the AC, I will certainly understand. It's just me trying to soak up a little more knowledge about WP policy and procedure. Thanks for your help. Jwrosenzweig 21:40, 3 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Interesting points, but I have a simple answer: My statement was in reference to accepting the case. The AC has not reached any understanding not already contained in our previous rulings. We could also use some more help - we've already lost one member and another has never voted in a single case (a third is having computer problems right now, but will come back). IMO, we need to at least double the size of the AC. --mav
- Thanks for the response, mav. I hope I didn't come across as accusing you of neglecting my case at all! I realize now it may have seemed that way. And certainly I'm not accusing the AC of reaching some kind of secret policy agreement behind closed doors -- I don't expect that at all. I just know that, in your private deliberations, the AC must slowly be developing a sense of how the body deals with problems, and what it looks for in a good arbitration case. But obviously such things are too intangible to be easily put into words, and even if they could be, I can imagine it might be better not to talk about them with an outsider (people seem so suspicious of all the AC's moves without giving them more to work with, I know....why, I honestly can't figure out. I hope you haven't been getting _too_ much flak, and am sorry for the snide remarks I've seen. I can imagine how difficult your jobs must be). Given your final comments, though, should I expect an election for the AC is anticipated soon? Do you know what kind of schedule the AC is on in that regard? Again, just curious, Jwrosenzweig 05:01, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Good work
[edit]Mav - just wanted to let you know that we all appreciate the work you do on the dates and Selected anniversaries. I hearby award you the title of honorary bot. →Raul654 05:15, Jun 4, 2004 (UTC)

Chemical elements
[edit]Mav, I'm working on chemical elements in spanish wikipedia and Enciclopedia Libre and I have a problem with table images. Do you know if is any reason why in the table-image of zinc is 30P 35N (Zn-65) instead of 30P 34N (Zn-64) the most abundant estable isotope? The same occurs in copper, nickel and maybe in other elements ¿How did you selected the isotope of the table image? Guillermo 14:52, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- I was selecting the neutron number from the most abundant isotope for natural elements and the neutron number of the isotope with the longest half-life for synthetic elements. You will have to ask the person who created the images you cite why those ones are different. See User:Schneelocke. --mav
- Ok, thanks.
UFO move
[edit]As I said on Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion, I'm blaming David Gerard and Avsa for the move. I was merely an instrument because there was page history in the way. I've left a note on Mr. Gerard's talk page since he seems to understand things a little better than Avsa, who performed a copy/paste move. -- Cyrius|✎ 02:28, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Ah - I'm inclined to move the page back then. --mav
Sorry, let me clear this up
[edit]I changed the format of the "Selected Anniversaries" to include three days for consistency reasons. The "Featured Article" section just above it includes the three most recently featured articles and I therefore thought it would be appropriate to include the three msot recent days in the "Selected Anniversaries" section below it.
I think this is friendlier for new visitors, improves usability slightly and provides a more consistant format. Sorry, I did not explain this on the June 6 selected anniversaries page. I did however mention it on the June 5 talk section (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:June_5_selected_anniversaries) and the discussion area for "Featured Articles" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Feature).
I do plan on extending this new format to all the "Selected Anniversaries" pages. While the change is minor, it will take me some tome. I've already done all of June, and I expect to finish July by the end of next week. There isn't really much of a hurry as I will probably be done with all the months before June's out.
Sorry for that. It's just that I've been reverted more times than I would have liked today... I hope I cleared this up to your satisfaction.
- OK - Everything is cool. When I reverted your edit I did not know your plans or even that you had converted all of June already. Carry on. :) --mav
Instead of starting temp pages, going through a sweeping overhaul of the origins article, rewriting and reorganizing the entire article, I figured out a better way to reconcile our two positions:
- Remove Origins of the American Civil War from the History of the United States series (and thus from the corresponding series boxes as well).
- Split History of the United States (1789-1861), creating new articles History of the United States (1789-1845) and History of the United States (1845-1865).
- History of the United States (1789-1865) already contains a section on sectionalism and slavery. Use this as a starting point for writing a new section, History of the United States (1845-1865)#Origins of the American Civil War-- the 5-15 minute read/summary that you're advocating. Instead of working on the temp page, you can start work on this article.
- Arrange the subsections of History of the United States (1845-1865)#Origins of the American Civil War so that they correspond with the sections of the orgins article.
- Underneath the heading of History of the United States (1845-1865)#Origins of the American Civil War, add a note stating, "For further details see Origins of the American Civil War." 172 08:16, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- I'll have to think about that - no time right now I'm afraid. --mav
- That's fine. Happy editing until then. 172 07:37, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

A note
[edit]Hi Mav. I just dropped by to express my dissapointment that we (the 'pedia community) missed out on having you as one of our two elected representatives, and also to note my thanks for your kind and supportive comments on my talk page a while back. My dissappointment about the former is tempered by my pleasure at seeing two other very fine Wikipedians elected (in Angela and Anthere).
As for the latter, I have more-or-less accepted a return to active status, at least for the time being, but lately I have very, very little time to contribute much. I have been hard at work setting up a wiki for a local environmental group I belong to (using the excellent MediaWiki software) and, now that it's up and running at last, there is a mass of other stuff I need to do - write example entries in each category to serve as templates, write and/or adapt help files for a very different community largely made up (unlike the 'pedia community) of non-geeks who need simple instructions, try to work out and document a copyright policy, tweak the software further, and so on. Hell, sometimes I eat and sleep!
Anyway, just thought I'd drop by to say thanks.
Best — Tannin 01:41, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind words and I wish you luck on seeding the wiki you created. I remember back when Wikipedia was still less than a year old and there still was a lot of basic seeding going on. --mav
Thoughts?
[edit]Mav, first I must echo Tannin's comments. I can of course be nothing but pleased that we have two good Wikipedians on the board, and all I can do is express a wish that there were two other spots on the board to hold two other candidates I very much wanted to see elected. You are one of those two.
But my thoughts here (and my request for your thoughts) circle around another topic. I've been talking to Mark Richards about trolls, bannings, policy, etc. You can see a very lengthy comment of mine to him at User talk:Mark Richards if you want a more comprehensive overview of my reactions to him and my suggestions. What it boils down to is that we are agreed that the policy needs changing around here, in order to empower admins to do the right thing -- this way admins aren't having to extend themselves beyond policy to keep the place in shape (forcing all of us....you on the AC especially....to define "good" and "bad" ways of breaking policies). I have asked Mark to write up a proposal for changing the policy. I would like you to be involved in this too, because of my respect for you, because of the respect you generally have here, and because your perspective as an AC member is vital, I think. You know this place better than I do -- where is the best place to get the policy discussion under way? I have promised Mark I will help him in this endeavor, but I find myself at a loss for how to best proceed. You seem to be very keen on policy changes addressing this issue also -- will you help? And what are your thoughts? Please leave me a note on my talk page, if you can -- I will check back here also, if you find it easier to reply here. If you feel for any reason you can't be involved, please don't feel bad. Mark and I will sort things out. Thanks, Jwrosenzweig 18:17, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks! :) A good place to start talk about policy change is at Wikipedia talk:Policies and guidelines. More later. --mav
I've placed a stub there - I would like to invite folks to join me in stepping back from actions that, in retrospect, were a little confrontational, and look at ways of moving this forward. Mark Richards 20:45, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I reverted your last edit because it screwed up the page text (badly). Re-add the text if you want, but please make sure it doesn't do the same thing again. →Raul654 04:02, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)
- I always use preview and it looks fine in Konqueror (my main browser) but broke badly in Mozilla. Must be an unmatched tag. In the future could you do a manual revert - autoreverting me as if I were some kind of vandal is rude. --mav
- Sorry about that, I had no intention to be rude. In the future, I'll be more careful. Anyway, I reverted because I wasn't the only one having the problem - Dori complained as well. →Raul654 04:09, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)
- Reverting non-vandal edits is fine so long as you give a reason (which can't be done with autorevert). Apology accepted. :) It is OK for me now in Mozilla - how does it look for you? --mav
Blood transfusion
[edit]An earlier blood transfusion failed to save the life of Pope Innocent VIII, in Rome, 1492, though two boys were bled to death, (giving rise to the Protestant myth of the "vampire Pope";).Wetman 04:14, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I've responded to your Another World objection in that forum. Hopefully you find the changes to your liking. I couldn't do what you suggested so I compromised. TheCustomOfLife 15:06, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Bryce Canyon
[edit]Since I've never really paid attention to featured articles, I wasn't sure where to give feedback (or what sort). If it is too nit-picky, or if I posted in the wrong place (the nominations page), please let me know. --- hike395 05:13, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Whoops! One thing I noticed is that the first photo of Bryce Amphitheatre is so wide, that when you narrow the window, the infobox goes behind the picture (in the Standard skin), or the picture covers the infobox (in the MonoBook skin). You may have to move that picture further down in the article (too bad), or do some HTML magic or something. -- hike395 14:19, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Instead of bombarding you with lots of nitpicks, I'm just copyediting the article myself. Now, I'm not the world's best copyeditor --- you may want to enlist one of the real nitpickers who hang out at Wikipedia. -- hike395 14:33, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Oh, and isn't the NPS map thumbnail too tiny to be worth the space? How about just a link to the map in the Geography section? --- hike395 14:34, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- OK, enough editing for today --- I'll come back to it later (unless someone else copyedits it). -- hike395 14:38, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Cool - thanks for the edits. I think the map is fine the way it is since it draws more attention than a media link would. It can be turned into a media link if and when a map which is more appropriate for that size is found. At least the general shape of the park can be seen at that size. I'll be leaving for Bodie and Mono Lake soon. U.S. 395 rocks! --mav
Steve Irwin
[edit]I noticed that the Steve Irwin article had an image by you, that seems to be blank, with only one history with the summary "(Fair use screenshot)". Has something gone wrong with the picture or something? Since there is no history other than the ceration I don't see what could have happened.... - Xgkkp 00:34, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

- Bonanza has the same issue. Can't they be replaced? TV Land just had a marathon of the episodes this weekend. TheCustomOfLife 16:28, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- They could, but that requires a time investment in something I do not have time for right now (I work on specific things and then move on - I'll eventually get around to creating another crop of screenshots). --mav
- Do you need another tape? I've taped about twenty-four hours of the Bonanza marathon. TheCustomOfLife 00:45, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Rename/move Jayhawk
[edit]I moved Jayhawks to Jayhawks (band) and fixed the links. I turned Jayhawks into a disambig page 'cause I couldn't move Jayhawk there. I would (gleefully) add the band to the Jayhawks page if it were moveable, but I need an admin to help. Mav? You busy? :-) Thanks Rick Boatright 21:40, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Where didya go?
[edit]On a chatty, non-Wiki note, where did you go near Mono Lake? Other than Bodie... I didn't catch you in time --- I would have asked you to take a photo of Wilson Butte (one of the Mono-Inyo Craters), because that is such a perfect example of a rhyolite dome. Well, maybe I'll get around to taking a snapshot. Anyway, lots of good rocks? Did you get up to the high country? -- hike395 04:28, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- We didn't go south far enough to get a good view of Wilson Butte. Maybe next time when we visit the Long Valley area. Mostly we did some exploring around the southern shore of Mono Lake by spending a couple hours in a ranger-guided tour of the tufa towers and sand tufa and a few hours driving around the northern base of Mono Craters (mostly on dirt roads). Oh, and we entered the area by going through Yosemite, but that was mostly at night (we started late on Friday). I'll be uploading 27 photos from the Mono Lake Basin and 49 from Bodie. -- mav
Glassboro Summit
[edit]You added a sentence about the summit conference to the article on Glassboro, New Jersey, but there was already a whole paragraph on it later on. I'm guessing you overlooked it, or you would've fixed the redundant wikilinks. Should all the material about the summit be moved ahead of the Geography/Demographics boilerplate? JamesMLane 04:32, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Opps! Yes, the history section should always be in front of the geography section in city articles. I thought that was just a plain Rambot article. I'll fix. --mav
OK, now that you've done that... maybe it should be undone. :) I see that you set up Glassboro Summit Conference as a link. I didn't think there'd be a separate article on the summit. If you think that's the way to go, we could restore your one-liner in this article, including the wikilink, and turn my graf into the stub of the new article. Trouble is, I'm dubious about how much expansion that stub would ever get. JamesMLane 04:58, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Put the text where you think it is best. :) Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be just to de-link Glassboro Summit Conference. If there is ever enough info for a separate article, then somebody else could create the link easy enough. --mav
I went the de-linking route. Just in case someone does get inspired to create Glassboro Summit Conference, though, I made it a redirect to Glassboro, New Jersey, so this hypothetical editor can see what we already have about the summit. JamesMLane 04:16, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Arbitration: Mr Natural Health
[edit]Hi, I'm just leaving a note on every Arbitration Committee Member's talk page pleading with them to look at this case more quickly. He is back in full flow these last few days [2] --bodnotbod 02:27, Jun 25, 2004 (UTC)
- Please pass my thanks to the Arbitration committee. As a new user this makes me feel much more positive about things. Is there any kind of ruling (not in this case in particular, I mean generally) about cleaning up after these sorts of things? --bodnotbod 04:55, Jun 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Will do. As a matter of fact yes at Wikipedia:Remove personal attacks (which should become policy if the corresponding MrNH principle passes). --mav
- It's not really the personal attacks that concern me. Essentially MNH's modus operandi (sp?) was that he'd 1) add a HUGE CAM box to an article. (it would be removed). 2) Add a smaller CAM box (it would be removed). 3)add a discrete set of links as a set (they would be removed) and then!...
- He would find an obscure report that he'd weave into the article body. ie (and this is a made up but genuinely demonstrative example) "weight lifting - as a complimentary approach - was used by 0.24% of Americans suffering from arthritis in concert with mainstream medical approaches". It's all those little nuggets that are going to be hard to fish out now. What they've done is to add this unpleasant little nugget of information which, although it may be true, makes you raise an eyebrow. Plus he'd add links to the reports
- Any advice? I guess you can only say "yeah, if you feel strongly, mop it up!" But frankly, most of those articles I was never really interested in, it was only when he hoved into view through edits on clinical depression that I got to see this whirlwind of activity. I dunno if I have the strength (having spent a lot of time putting the evidence in) to repair the articles I'm not really bothered about. Advice welcome, but - having written all that - I think I can summon up a little help to assist with that stuff.
- But if there's a tried and tested approach to this then please let me know. --bodnotbod 06:04, Jun 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Content disputes are a sticky issue that the AC doesn't want to touch. However going through the Wikipedia:dispute resolution process is a way to show us which users are not willing to work with others. We can rule on that. The content will heal in time (I'm sure there are plenty of people who will fix the articles MrNH worked on now that they can do so without getting into edit wars or in other ugliness). --mav
- Yeah, that sounds a positive way of looking at things. --bodnotbod 06:24, Jun 26, 2004 (UTC)

Jwrosenzweig 22:50, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Well yes, it is an elected position. But we have had one user resign so I'm not sure how that seat should be filled. I'll ask Jimbo when he gets back from Europe (who may just appoint somebody). --mav
Thanks re: Duran Duran
[edit]Thanks for the kind words on the Duran Duran article; I'd very much like to see it featured, and I'll continue to work on improving it. GFDL band photos (even photographer credit for same) is hard to come by, but I'm trying.
Sorry for my "whining" on the mailing list -- it came out much more petulant than I had intended, but I'm grateful that you apparently took the time to check out my contributions anyway, because I know how busy you are around here. I'd like you to know that I really appreciate all you do too -- this place would not be as professional, as elegant, or run as smoothly as it does without you. Thanks! --Catherine | talk 15:25, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- You are welcome - and thank you for doing such a good job on that and other articles (and for the kind words). :) There is so much to do around here that I really wish there were more hours in a day (or at least I didn't have to sleep!). Hi, Mav. Low priority social question --- I thought I knew this area pretty durn well, but I'm scratching my head trying to figure out which mountains these are. Did you take the photo right near town? Were you facing west? (I know if you face SW, you see the Sawteeth, but these aren't it). -- hike395 16:09, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- IIRC, it was taken a few miles northwest of Bridgeport and perpendicular to U.S. 395. --mav
Mount Whitney pic (and other cropped pics)
[edit]What happened to your 300px wide pic of Mount Whitney? In my opinion, your cropped 300 pixel image was far superior to the wideshot shrunk down to 300px wide. (Also, notice that the template for Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains does not call for a thumbed image --- the discussion resolved specifically against the thumbing).
I can reconstruct the 300px: it doesn't seem to exist any more ??? What's up? -- hike395 04:24, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Whoa! I just noticed you uncropped your Minarets photo at Sierra Nevada (US). I've got a much better close-up of the Minarets (taken from < 1km away), I can certainly substitute, if you don't mind. The wideshot just doesn't show things.
- What I've done in some other cases is put links to the larger images, not in the caption, but on the image page. So, if someone likes the image and clicks through, they can get to larger images easily.
- Let's not give up on cool close-ups! -- hike395 04:28, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Do what you think is best. I've been systematically deleting the thumbs. --mav

Hello, I listed this on featured article candidates for removals, mainly because I wanted a meta discussion, to see how we manage to have articles featured but not on the main page. I have really no opinion about whether it should be removed or not, but I'd just like to say that also a removal from the main page, is an encouragement to disrupting POV-warriors.

Hi. I went ahead and added a disambiguation page. I didn't mean to break links. What I wanted to do was separate the Catholic Church Communion, which is what really was being written about in the article, and catholicism in general, which sparked most of the debates in the discussion page.
I think I've done all that needs to be done to fix the broken links. Let me know if there's something else I need to do.

Catholicism as presented in that article generally refers to the belief system of the Catholic Church Communion instead of actually focusing on catholicism in general. This has led to a slew of confusion, as there are several churches which do not follow the Pope in Rome but still call themselves catholic or have a Pope that is not John Paul II, and there are also a slew of churches which do follow the Pope in Rome but are certainly not Roman nor do they follow the Roman Catholicism which the article was about.
My goal was to allow anyone who linked to catholicism in the first place be able to select the various kinds or meanings of catholicism without favoring any one of them. Thus, I decided to link to the churches claiming to follow catholicism as well as add general language about catholicism so that people looking for the belief system of the Roman Catholic Church and people looking for the belief system of the Old Catholic Church, the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, or the Maronite Catholic Church will be able to find what they want.
This is what the debate on Talk:Catholicism has mainly focused on, and I was trying to offer a solution. I understand that this action was a big one, but I thought a disambig. would be able to handle the problem. Do you think that my course of action was ill-concieved based on this? If so, do you know of a better way which would still solve this problem?
Thanks. Pmadrid 09:04, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Ok, I'll agree to that. Sorry about the trouble. Pmadrid 09:16, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)
No trouble at all. :) --mav
Glad to see on your user page that everything's alright. Welcome back! 172 05:17, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I've done some work on this while you were away. Would you mind looking at it and telling me whether I've met your objections? Thanks, Morwen - Talk 11:02, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I have edited the article to address your concerns. Now, each section serves as a summary, with links to "main articles." -- Emsworth 17:44, Jul 10, 2004 (UTC)
- Wow - that was fast! Great work! :) --mav
Dear Mr. Maveric: Hi! How are you? It has come to my attention that User Gamaliel has taken special "care" of messing up some articles I originally wrote, with some interest in Modesto Cartagena. He is also erasing the ==See Also== departments in the articles I wrote. He told me, and I quote "The extra links make this look like a Hogh School encyclopedia". I tried to deal peace with him, and all he wants me to do is apologize to him! My son Antonio told me that I must complain to an administrator and that you are an excellent mediator in these cases.
He also told me there is a slight chance we might have a case of a vandal with this user. I dont know because Im fairly new here, but since my son recommended you, I wanted to ask if you could please take a look at the case and his edit record.
I asked the person if he has something against Puerto Ricans because he was taking out the List of Puerto Ricans from all the articles about Puerto Ricans. In no moment did I mean to imply that he was a racist because he is a Latino himself; however, he took it the wrong way.
I enjoy wikipedia to the most, but when people act like he does, it bothers me some. I think and hope I am contributing to wikipedia with the articles about important Puerto Ricans whose legends, as the movie title say, might have "Gone With the Wind". Later on I want to write more about people in the military, and my son suggested I buy a book he saw about Arizona women who were unsung heroes during the wild west times, so that I might honor them with an article too.
Thanks for everything!
Waiting for a response, respectfully yours, User:Marine 69-71
- I wish I could help but I'm working on a grant proposal right now for the Wikimedia Foundation. --mav
- OK - grant stuff over. I've had time to look at the situation and leave a response. I'll be watching the situation for a while. If this becomes an issue for other articles, then please let me know. --mav
I don't care about the links anymore, I had my say, I concede that issue and I won't remove them any more, it's done. But if Marine had a question or problem about my removal of that link, a polite discussion on the talk page would have made my reasoning and motivations clear. I do not care to be accused of vandalism, and while I haven't been here long, I think a look at my list of user contributions will quickly show that I am far from one. I also don't care to be accused, either directly or by implication, of racism. I have no wish to have a fued with this user (and I considered this matter completely over until I read your comment and realized s/he complained to an administrator about me) but such accusations are no way to open a dialogue, and I really don't think it's unreasonable to ask for an apology when your username is permanently preserved in the edit history of an article with the wild accusation "Do you have something against Puerto Ricans?"
Also, the claim that I "was taking out the List of Puerto Ricans from all the articles about Puerto Ricans" is flatly untrue. I only recall removing that link from Modesto Cartagena, and while I may have removed such links from one or two other articles that I simply don't remember, I certainly wasn't hunting down "all" of them nor was I singling out Puerto Ricans or Marine's articles for any special treatment. Nor am I "messing up" this or any other article beyond correcting spelling errors and copyediting, and if he's going to make that accusation, I'd like to him/her to point out where I "messed up" the Modesto Cartagena article beyond removing the link and correcting errors of grammar and spelling. I also don't recall contributing to or altering any other article Marine participated in.
Marine seems to have the best of intentions, but such wild accusations that s/he has been making are untrue, unnecessary, and hurtful. Gamaliel 05:41, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- I think you both have the best of intentions. I've said as much on Marine's talk page. --mav
Grand Canyon picture
[edit]Nice picture of the lodges at the south rim village at the Grand Canyon. The caption reads "Maswick Lodge" but the picture is actually of the El Tovar hotel and the Thunderbird and Kachina lodges. The Maswick lodge is newer and is a hundred yards or so from the canyon rim, so it couldn't be seen in a picture like this. cf. http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/galleries/img_gc_map.htm
- OIC - thanks for the info. I'll fix this later. --mav
Proposition
[edit]Hey Mav: Thanks for anwering to my dad's concern. I think also we still need an eye on that Gamaliel dude.
That said, I want to ask how do you make propositions to the foundation?
I had a brain storm while in the shower recently and I thought of a few new ideas that might help wikipedia's fame and maybe put us on "I love the 2000s" when that show is made in 2011 by MTV and I want to propose that, because in my opinion, we have a great chance at becoming the "Sex and the City" of this decade, you know, the thing people will talk about most when they remember this decade.
Thanks for everything, and God bless you!
Sincerely yours, "Antonio DiSmAy ArTiSt Martin"
- Meta is a great place for that type of thing. --mav
Thanks for the Oppenheimer work
[edit]Thanks again, I found that entire exchange exceedingly frustrating until you came along. If you are in the mood to edit more "added on NPOV and off topic sentences in the intro paragraph" written by you-know-who, take a look at Wernher von Braun, which I think suffers from the same problems. ;) --Fastfission 17:42, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Will do after work today. --mav
Steward interface has moved
[edit]Hi, following there being no objections at m:talk:steward, the steward interface has been moved from Test to Meta. I have transferred all the permissions across so you can now use m:special:makesysop for making sysops on any wiki. This will be logged at m:Meta:Bureaucrat log. The old log from Test is now at m:Meta:Bureaucrat log/Archive1. Angela. 12:50, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I've taken the liberty of adding screencaps in lieu of the broken ones that you haven't gotten around to adding yet. I hope you like them; tell me what you think. Mike H 18:23, Jul 19, 2004 (UTC)
- Looks a lot better than my broken image links. Thanks. :) --mav
- You're welcome. I added pictures to other sitcoms but I replaced Sanford and Son. I assume you put pictures there, too. :-) Mike H 20:13, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)
wikibooks.org
[edit]Hi, i was told by de:Benutzer:Stw that you own the domain wikibooks.org. That domain seems to have DNS problems: Trying to access the site I get a page at GoDaddy.com (64.202.167.192) saying "www.wikibooks.org coming soon! This page is parked FREE at GoDaddy.com!". What's wrong? -- de:Benutzer:Duesentrieb
- It works for me. Jimbo renewed the registration a day late, so maybe the DNS server you use was told by InterNIC that the domain was expired. AFAIK, everything should be OK now. I did let wikibook.org and wikibook.com (the singular) expire though. --mav
- Works fine now. Seems like DNS-caching/update problem. I was trying it from Germany, btw -- seems like a lot of people has problems accessing the site from here. -- de:Benutzer:Duesentrieb
Keep on the good work (for a unified wikipedia/wikimedia
[edit]The mailinglist have become too much for me to follow carefully but I have noticed that you envision a later unified Wikipedia. I want to express my full support for that. I addition to merging all languages into one databse I think all the other projects that I would rather label 'categories' should go into that database to. I do not want to allow everything on the wikipedia, but only one "door" is needed for all the Wikimedia projects. All wikipedia articles would still be wikipedia articles, but if a newbie puts up a recipe or dict. def., it can be moved to the right category ir labeled something else instead of copypaste, and so on.
I really cnnot understand why it wasn't done like this from the beginning, although I guess it was just that much easier making a new database, then rooting up the whole structure of the code....
Anyways, hope you see it in a similar way, and have a good time working for it... ---Dittaeva 18:59, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks! Keeping things together is very important but sadly our software doesn't really support that. I'm very glad to see all the support on the mailing list for keeping Meta as one wiki though. --mav
- Well I've come a bit further in my reading of the mailinglist, and it seems to me that Erik really want the interface improved too, seemingly just as I, haven't considered the Meta issue much though, am not shure what the issue is, and where I stand, but splitting it up in several domains with the software in use now I think is not wise, no. ---Dittaeva 11:31, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
HI THERE, YOURSELF
[edit]Thanks, Mav....I've been around the wiki all the time - I just get snowed under the mailing lists!!!
RoseParks 03:29, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Good to hear! I've switched from being primarily a copyeditor to working for hours and hours offline on sets of articles. So I also might look like I'm not around much. --mav
O of M
[edit]Hi Mav! long time no see :) I happened to see the other day that some of the Order of Magnitude "chain pages" have been collapsed into a single page with redirects (the mass ones at least). I'm wondering if this change was discussed while I was away. I don't think it's an improvement and I was a little dismayed as a number of us , including you & I, put a lot of effort into those, and a lot of material is now consigned to the old revisions. -- Tarquin 08:29, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Nice to see you are still around! :) Yeah, I reverted a few of those but left most of the stubs stay as redirects. If you happen to have a ref for that type of thing, then I think we can and should revert all the redirects. That way each of the individual OoM articles could have more or less complete listings while the mass, area, energy, pages could just have notable examples. --mav
Your user pic
[edit]Daniel, just a friendly suggestion: replace your user pic with one that has you smiling. I know a good, intelligent guy like you has plenty to smile about. Regards, —B|Talk 02:53, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- I'll think about it. Maybe I could have a series of photos to indicate my mood. ;) --mav
- Good, intellingent and good looking I shall add to that other guy's last comment..:) Anyways, I was banned from editing the Lori Hacking article, about how a man found a hair in a trash can near the furniture store her husband was seen at and the police say its possible it might belong to her. . I wanted to ask if you could help me get that ban off. It happens so many times but Im used to it already...dont get frustrated, get used to it! lol!
I also wanted you to take a look at my version of the article and Rickk's, since Rickk has begun a revert war with me, whereas I stick to what I read on the news, Rick says he doesnt want her husband to be blamed. Let me know which version you like better :)
Thank you and God bless you! "Antonio Teenage Drama Queen Martin" (and I didnt call myself "Lindsay Lohan Lover Martin" cause I think thats still illegal, lol!)
- Both versions seem to have the same info... --mav

"Self-ref"
[edit]If by the expression "remove self-ref" you are implying that I added a featured articles category link to articles such as Bruno Kreisky which I wrote, in order to promote myself, I did not, and I find the suggestion that I did offensive. I did not add the featured article category to these articles. Having said, I don't see why you are removing the category links. If articles are featured articles, why should they not be designated as such? Adam 07:58, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- That was not in ref to you, but to Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Avoid self-references for the other part. --mav

Funding bar
[edit]Saw that you're looking for a way to have a funding bar automatically updated when funding is received. The folks over at last.fm have just this at their donate page. Their site is running mostly on open source software from audioscrobbler.com (its the same people and servers..), anyway they might be willing to help with some advices or code. last.fm is BTW a great service. ---Dittaeva 09:38, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)
