http://wp.aulinx.de/test/ that's awesome! are you planning on submitting it? Just a quick suggestions:

• TOC border, yuck! :p
• normal-state links of the article's content shouldn't have the text-decoration: none attribute.
• use a:hover! >_<
• move the search to the top right. it should be accessible easily
• borders in content heading = bad. not all browsers render them equally when they have Z conflicts.
• all content images should be aligned to the right, aligning to left fvcks up the content's format
• list-style-type: none for external links, the globe image is sufficient (looks so cool!)
• move, edit, and history should be moved to the documentActions section. in other words, content views should have "view article", "discuss", "what links here" and "related articles" but no actions
• use a:hover for the love of God!

Apart from that, AWESOME skin. Can't wait for it to be submitted!

Hi Maio, current development is happening at http://wiki.aulinx.de/. It's mostly wired up now, something happens actually when you click on the links...

I'll add the new code to cvs HEAD soon, feel free to hack away on it (or just save the page in moz or similar and hack away on the stylesheets).

I'll add the hover, but won't move the search box, feel free to do a competing css for that (you won't need to change the xhtml). Imo there's not enough space for that. I'm often in #mediawiki and #wikipedia, much better place to discuss things there.. -- Gabriel Wicke 12:34, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Germans

I've for long (a year, actually) been itched by the way Wikipedia-links are done with often sloppy distinctions between nationality, citizenship and ethnicity (with regard to persons) and also between nations and countries. This is particularly obvious in the case of people or entities that are denoted as German. A link to the Federal Republic of Germany is often outright unhistorical and wrong, but this has until now been the most usual.

Therefore I'm considering an article on Germans, which I've started at User:Ruhrjung/Germans. I would wish to avoid too much of edit wars after having started to link to the article. In particular, I would not wish to see the current disputes over German-Polish matters automatically extend also to this article, why I kindly ask you for comments now, in advance, in order to try to find wordings acceptable to as many as possible of concerned wikipedians.

Comparing versions in history

Hi Gabriel!

I read your post on the tech mailinglist regarding the implemented code handling comparison of versions on http://wikidev.net/Main_Page?action=history

I've looked at it and do find it an improvement, but I even though I now understand why there are two columns, it is quite confusing when zou don't understand.

Also the framing behaviour is not consistent. Firstly I think it should be active at first load, and secondly on my browser (WinXP, Opera 7.23) it did not frame the chosen versions until the checked versions "changed side", that is, when you load the page the selected radio button for the newer version appears on the left and the older on the right. One can then select the same version twice, and also move the right side selection down without any framing.... anyway the framing is not consistent and I'm able to selected one version as both old and new. I'll be happy to follow this up with screenshots, testing, better writing...Dittaeva 16:51, 19 May 2004 (UTC)

I've since changed a few things around- you'll have to do a ctrl-f5 (ie,opera) or shift-reload to get the proper js for the page. Works fine in my opera 7.23/linux after reload. -- Gabriel Wicke 01:01, 20 May 2004 (UTC)

Parametrisierung

Hi Gabriel,
in der de:wp zeichnet sich ab, dass im Rahmen der Qualitätsoffensive als nächstes die Gemeinden in Deutschland drankommen. Eigentlich der richtige Zeitpunkt, auf ein zentrales Template für die Infobox umzusatteln.
Ich hab ein wenig damit gespielt und bin auf ein paar Bugs gestoßen, auf die so recht niemand eine Antwort weiß.

• Eine benannter Parameter nach dem Muster DISTRICT = Grevenmacher funktioniert nicht. Die Pipe wird als Ende des Parameters interpretiert.
• Ein Link im Template nach dem Muster Capital: [[{{{CAPITAL}}}]]] wird durchgängig als Edit-Link ausgegeben, unabhängig davon, ob er auf einen vorhandenen oder nicht vorhandenen Artikel verweist.
• Die Übergabe von Bildpfaden an das Template nach dem Muster [[Image:{{{IMAGE_PATH}}}|center|Map of {{{MUNICIPALITY}}}]] haut gar nicht hin.

Die Diskussionen unter den Entwicklern verfolge ich praktisch nicht. Daher habe ich auch keinen Plan, wer nun bei was helfen kann. Aber vielleicht hast Du eine Idee, wie man das fixen kann. Danke -- Ralf

Der beste Ansprechpartner in der Sache ist Tim Starling, häufig in #mediawiki anzutreffen. Ich kenne mich damit auch aus, das ganze ist aber tricky und (meiner Meinung nach) besser mit einer Metadata-syntax zu lösen. Sowas wie [[MD::DISTRICT=Grevenmacher]][[MD::CAPITAL=bla]]. Das ganze könnte dann in einer Template unabhängig vom Artikel dargestellt werden. Ein anderer Faktor ist ESI. Mal schauen.. -- Gabriel Wicke 11:14, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Danke für Deine Antwort. Tim Starling wurde mir auch schon als Ansprechpartner genannt. Seine Antwort war aber nur ein Link zu einem Thread der Mailingliste, der mehr Rückschlüsse auf Abstimmungsschwierigkeiten unter den Entwicklern als auf eine Lösung des Problems erlaubte. Vielleicht fällt Dir ja was ein, was uns weiterhilft. -- Ralf

Front page cleanup

Hi gwicke, I was just wondering about the presentation of alternate languages on the front page. It's confusing for first-time users to be presented with the skin-based language bar at left in monobook as well as the large language menu at the bottom of the page. Would it be possible to do any of the following?

• label the skin's language options as "this page in other languages" instead of "other languages"
• remove monobook's language selection for only the front page
• have monobook link to all the languages that are currently in the large language menu at bottom, so we can axe that altogether?

Hi Silsor, just got around to check my watchlist again..

The last is easy to do, but the list might be too long (haven't tried). The first can be done by editing the relevant MediaWiki message, see MediaWiki:Otherlanguages. #2 is also possible without programming by making sure that all interwiki links are prefixed with ":".

I'd personally prefer #3 if it fits- the space isn't used currently, and it might look a bit tidier (and more impressive).

A solution to the short-space problem might be to use a page at meta for the full list, and link to it as an interwiki link from the front pages with the link text 'More languages' or similar. This would require an extension to the interwiki code handling so that it uses the alternate text after the pipe instead of or additional to the language name. This would need some discussion and thought first i'd say. Wouldn't be very hard to implement if there's a majority in favour. -- Gabriel Wicke 22:31, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Recache

Hi Gwicke, would you be able to run recache on Special:Uncategorizedpages? -- User:Docu

You can run it yourself in off-peak hours, before 8am and after 23pm UTC. Unfortunately recache affects DB performance a lot, so it brings the site to a halt when run in the higher-traffic part of the day, so we decided to disable it depending on the time. -- Gabriel Wicke 22:03, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I just tried (05:41, 2004 Sep 7 (UTC)), but it didn't work. If the refresh could be run further in the background that might help. If there is a traffic chart I should look at before I refresh it, I would obviously do that. Weekends seem to be a bit lower-traffic. BTW I thought you had disabled recache entirely on Sunday [1]. -- User:Docu

Only if misermode is on, which depends on the time of the day in the wikipedia config. There was talk about calling the cache-update from cron at night, every few days for each wiki- doesn't seems to be done yet though. -- Gabriel Wicke 16:35, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

See http://wikidev.net/Test for the current code. Long captions are a bit problematic, so i currently don't allow them to stretch the box with overflow:hidden. A higher box would introduce a half-empty line in the grid, not a major problem but not very pretty. I have an idea for this though, need to test it. -- Gabriel Wicke 12:00, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Consistent list alignment in Monobook and Chick

Hi Gabriel. Would you mind having a look at MediaWiki talk:Monobook.css#Consistent list alignment and commenting?

Summary: you added some margin-left to ordered lists back in April–May 2004, presumably to fit three-digit list numbers, but now when they are mixed with unordered lists and nested, the list hierarchy isn't reflected in the page rendering (as it is in other skins, or without CSS). hit counter for wikipedia

Dear Gwicke, I have noticed that hit counters can be used within MediaWiki, while Wikipedia does not use them as to avoid server slow downs. Could you tell me if there would be any way to include a hit counter on WIkipedia possibly by doing something with the MediaWiki software?
